• Brehm Fellowship Application

    Students seeking this fellowship from the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders should complete this application form and submit it by February 8, 2023*.

    Applicant Requirements

    • Must have been a Brehm Scholar and have conducted and successfully completed a significant research project during the Brehm Scholarship year, working closely with a faculty partner
    • Must be currently enrolled in a graduate program within EMU’s College of Education and on track to complete the program within six years of beginning the program
    • Must have a minimum GPA as a graduate student; if no graduate GPA is available at the time of application, the GPA requirement will apply to the undergraduate program. The Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders Scholarship Committee may approve an exception in special circumstances
    • Must show a demonstrated record of academic excellence, leadership, and community service
    • Must exemplify outstanding pre-professional and professional skills in the field of special education, coupled with a commitment to serve children, adolescents, and adults with special needs

    The following are expectations for Delores Soderquist Brehm Research Fellows, if awarded:

    • Work closely with a faculty mentor to enhance and expand the scope of the research project conducted during the Brehm Scholarship year
    • Disseminate research and findings at a minimum of three (3) professional conferences
    • Submit articles for publication in professional journals with the expectation that at least one (1) is accepted during the course of the Fellowship year
    • Work with the faculty mentor to develop partnerships with K-12 schools and/or organizations servicing the special needs community and deliver training/services based on their research both on-site and on campus

    NOTE: An interview with Brehm Center Directors, Derrick Fries and Jackie McGinnis, and a member of the department Scholarship Committee may be required.

    NOTE: An interview with the Brehm Center Co-Directors and a member of the department Scholarship Committee may be required.
