• INSTRUCTIONS FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION & COMMUNICATION SCIENCES and DISORDERS SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS
     
  • Students seeking scholarships in the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders should complete this application form and submit it by February 8, 2023*.

    • All scholarships require at least one reference/recommendation, which must come from a current faculty member in the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders. If you are applying for the Lowery Scholarship, three are required, at least one of which must be from a current faculty member in the Department.

    You will be asked to provide name(s) and email address(es) for those people from whom you wish to receive a recommendation. Upon submitting this scholarship application, those people will be notified automatically, and asked to fill out a recommendation form. No other recommendation forms will be accepted.

    • All scholarship applications further require a Personal/Professional Statement, which supports your application by describing the following:

    — Your background
    — Skills
    — Talents
    — Personal/professional goals
    — Commitment to the field of special education
    — Service to the college, university, and/or community:

    * volunteer opportunities
    * organization memberships
    * leadership positions
    * conference presentations

    • It should be clear that your essay was written for the purpose of applying for departmental scholarships. For example, address the need for/planned use of any monies awarded.

    • If you are applying for a scholarship based on financial need, please note that financial need is determined by having a FAFSA on file by the end of the first week of March.

    • Please limit your essay to no more than three pages, double-spaced, using Times New Roman 12 pt. font.  You will attach your essay, on a different page, before you submit this application.

  • The following scholarships are available to students majoring in Special Education or Communication Sciences & Disorders. Since some scholarships state very specific requirements, be sure to read each description carefully. Please specify the scholarship(s) for which you are applying by clicking the box(es) below. 
     
  • Angelloci Family Scholarship - (one awarded)

    • Available to graduate student majoring in Communication Sciences & Disorders
    • Minimum GPA of 3.2 is required
    • Must show financial need, as determined by the Office of Financial Aid
    • Preference given to a student who received their undergraduate degree from EMU
  • Bearline Wallace Brooks Scholarship - (one awarded)

    • Available to undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Special Education, specializing in EI
  • Ann Demonet Scholarship - (multiple awards)

    • Available to undergraduate or graduate students admitted and enrolled in the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders
    • Must show financial need, as determined by the Office of Financial Aid
  • Jill Robinson Donnellan Scholarship - (one or two awards)

    • Available to undergraduate or graduate students majoring in Special Education, specializing in EI
    • Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required
  • Charles M. and Lucy A. Elliott Scholarship - (multiple awards)

    • Available to undergraduate students pursuing a degree in the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders
    • Academic performance is a criterion
    • Participation in departmental activities is a criterion
  • Everybody is Extraordinary Scholarship - (one awarded)

    • Available to undergraduate or graduate students with disabilities pursuing a degree in the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders
    • Academic performance is a criterion
    • In your Personal Statement, describe how special education and/or disability has impacted your life
  • Bessie Fox Uniqueness Scholarship - (multiple awards)

    • Available to undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders
    • Academic performance is a criterion
  • Flossie Gabrielson Memorial Endowed Scholarship - (multiple awards)

    • Available to undergraduate or graduate students majoring in Special Education or Communication Sciences and Disorders
    • Preference given to those with financial need, as determined by the Office of Financial Aid
  • Dr. Gary B. and Dr. Nancy Halmhuber Navarre Graduate Endowed Scholarship - (one or two awarded)

    • Available to Master’s or Specialist degree student pursuing a degree in the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders
    • Must be enrolled in high incidence areas, specifically EI, CI, or LD
    • Applicant must have completed at least half of the program in which they are enrolled (approx. 15-18 credits)
  • Marylyn E. Lake Scholarship - (multiple awards)

    • Available to undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders
    • Preference is given to students majoring in the area of CI
    • Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required
    • In your essay, you must describe why you have chosen the field of special education, and give examples of your commitment to the field
    • Letter of recommendation describing involvement in campus/community activities by someone familiar with the applicant’s academic work and/or campus and/or community involvement. (Further directions on Page 6 of this application.)
  • James G. Lowery Scholarship - (one awarded)

    • Available to Senior undergraduate student majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders
    • Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required
    • Participation in the National Student Speech and Hearing Association and/or other professional activity
    • THREE (3) written references (Further directions on Page 6 of this application.)
    • In your written statement, explain how the scholarship would be used, if awarded
  • Nora W. Martin Scholarship - (one awarded)

    • Available to undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders
    • Minimum GPA of 2.5 is required
    • Preference to applicants who graduated from a public school
    • Preference to students who contribute to the diversity of the campus
  • Martha Horton Ramsey Scholarship - (multiple awards)

    • Available to undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders
    • Academic performance is a criterion
  • James D. and Helene C. Reader Scholarship - (multiple awards)

    • Available to undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders
    • Those enrolling in student teaching are encouraged to apply
    • Preference given to those with financial need, as determined by the Office of Financial Aid
  • Suzanne J. Stevens Endowed Scholarship in Special Education - (multiple awards possible)

    • Junior, senior, or graduate student with a declared major in the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders
    • Minimum 3.0 GPA
    • Preference given to those with financial need, as determined by the Office of Financial Aid
  • Barbara Arnold Thomas Memorial Scholarship - (multiple awards)

    • Available to undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders
    • Minimum GPA of 2.5 is required
  • Anne Thorne Scholarship in Speech-Language Pathology - (one awarded)

    • Available to a graduate student admitted to the Communication Sciences and Disorders program
    • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 is required (prior to entering the graduate program)
    • Demonstrated commitment to the field of Communication Sciences and Disorders through activities, service, memberships, and affiliations)
    • Your essay must include 1-2 pages about how the scholarship will make a difference to you
  • Connie Knott Toigo Scholarship - (one awarded)

    • Must be a graduate student pursuing a degree in special education
    • Preference for those with financial need a determined by the Office of Financial Aid
    • Preference for those who intend to teach in the state of Michigan
    • Requires an ADDITIONAL 2-page essay in which the applicant discusses her/his views on equality in education and the importance of diversity in professional educators
  • May Tuan Wu Ting Scholarship - (one awarded)

    • Available to undergraduate or graduate student from China or Taiwan
    • Minimum GPA of 2.5 is required (and must be maintained)
    • Duration of scholarship can not exceed 4 years (if undergraduate) or 2 years (if graduate)

  • • All scholarships require at least one recommendation. When submitting only one reference/recommendation, it must come from a current faculty member in the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders
