• Brehm Scholarship Application

    Students seeking to become Brehm Scholars should complete this application form and submit it by February 8, 2023*. NOTE: This is a one-year program of guided research with a faculty mentor with a follow-up symposium presentation the fall following the award year.

    Applicant Requirements

    • Undergraduate and graduate students admitted to the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders. Students from each of the academic programs within the department are eligible to apply: cognitively impaired, communication sciences and disorders, visually impaired, hearing impaired, physically or otherwise health impaired, autism spectrum disorders, and emotionally impaired.
    • Minimum GPA of 3.20
    • Demonstrated commitment to the field of special education and/or to the service of people with disabilities
    • Outstanding pre-professional skills as determined by the department Scholarship Committee
    • Interest in working with a faculty mentor on an individual research project

    If awarded, the recipient will:

    • Complete a year-long research process in collaboration with a faculty mentor in the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders
    • Disseminate research at EMU’s Undergraduate Symposium or Graduate Research Conference
    • Disseminate research at other academic venues.
    • Attend all regularly scheduled meetings with the faculty mentor.
    • Attend the Brehm Research Planning Conference and ALL other events. Attendance at these classes and events is MANDATORY; if you cannot fulfill these commitments, you will not be eligible.

      - Two weekends in the summer of the scholarship year
      - Three Saturdays during the fall and winter of the scholarship year
      - Brehm Research Symposium (attendee), in the fall of the scholarship year
      - Written submission to the Brehm Research Monograph due by July 1 following the scholarship year
      - Brehm Symposium (presenter) in the fall following the scholarship year

     

    Applicants are required to meet individually with the Brehm Center Co-Directors, Dr. Derrick Fries and Jacquelyn McGinnis, to talk about specific dates, prior to their application for the scholarship. Failure to do so may impact being awarded the scholarship.

  • Applicant Responsibilities

    NOTE: You must meet with the Brehm Co-Directors to discuss Brehm Scholars responsibilities prior to submitting your application.

    After meeting with the co-directors, please submit the following using the online application process:

    1. Requested demographic information.
    2. Personal statement including background, academic history, skills, talents, personal/professional goals, and commitment to the field of special education. You will attach your personal statement later in this application. To ensure an easy application process, please have this document ready before beginning the application.
    3. An additional essay (no more than 2 pages) addressing research interests and how working with a faculty mentor on this project may impact the field of special education. To ensure an easy application process, please have this document ready before beginning the application.
    4. Two detailed letters of support, at least one of which is from a faculty mentor in the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders.
