  • Have you received a clinical diagnosis? Please note that, as part of our eligibility criteria, applicants must have received a clinical diagnosis in order to continue through the application process.*
  • Do you have any physical disabilities? Veterans With Dogs primarily supports veterans with mental health conditions. Applications from veterans with physical disabilities will be considered on an individual basis; however, due to the nature of our assistance dog training and handling requirements, we are unable to support individuals with significant mobility impairments or those who are wholly reliant on a wheelchair as this is not our area of specialisation.*
  • Do you understand that we do not train or provide dogs for physical disabilities?*

  • Are you able to independently walk a dog for at least 40 minutes each day. Please note: This is a mandatory requirement of our programme, as assistance dogs require regular daily exercise and training by the applicant*
  • Do you have direct access to your own enclosed garden or yard area? This must be a secure space. A shared garden, indirect access or communal area is not accepted?*
  • Do you have any children or dependents under the age of 5 years old? At the time of dog placement the youngest child must be at least 5 years old.

    Applying for Owner-Assisted Training

    Key requirements:

    • Dog must be under three years old at training start point
    • Suitable size/breed for assistance work
    • Well-socialised, confident, calm, and friendly
    • Basic behaviours and manners established

    Process:

    • Attend Meet & Greet day with other applicants
    • Separate dog assessment arranged post Meet & Greet
    • Same dog standards apply as VWD-placed dogs
    • Please read our website FAQs thoroughly before applying with your own dog to avoid disappointment.

  • Will your dog be over the age of 3 YEARS? Please note: Due to the length and demands of our training programme, we are unable to accept dogs that are over 3 years of age at the point of application.
