NOTE: If you do not reside in the Parish of Mornington - which includes Mt Martha. You will be asked to go to your local Catholic Church in you own Parish. This is your faith community. It is where your children will also grow in their faith and be eligible to receive their other sacraments of - Reconciliation / 1st Eucharist / Confirmation.

A child over 7yrs of age is classified as a child of catechetical age and the child must:
- personally want to be baptised — it cannot simply be something Mum and Dad have decided;
- receive sufficient instruction in the truths of the Catholic faith;
- understand, at a level appropriate to their age, the obligations of Christian life;
- undergo a genuine catechumenate rather than simply a one-off Baptism class;
- begin living the Christian life during that period of formation; and be prepared appropriately regarding repentance for personal sin. (Canon 865 §1 core requirements).

Parents requesting Baptism accept the responsibility of being the first teachers of faith for their child. Therefore at least one parent should be a Catholic, as an infant cannot personally say “I believe.” The child is baptised in the faith of the Church (CCC 1282), and the parents, godparents and Christian community undertake to nurture that faith..

Church law asks that before an infant/child is baptised there be a founded hope that the child will be brought up in the Catholic religion.
