  • Tattoo:  Patients admitted for spay or neuter surgery will have a small amount of green tattoo ink placed on or near the incision line as a nationally recognized method to indicate sterilized status.

  • Vaccines:  Rabies and distemper (DHPP for dogs or FVRCP for cats) are required for dogs and cats in order to proceed with surgery.

    • These vaccines must be completed at least two weeks prior to your surgery appointment.
    • If your vaccinations were done at another veterianry practice, please send records prior to your pet's surgery appointment. Records may be emailed to hsbvhospital@boulderhumane.org
    • For resource-limited clients who need low cost vaccine options, please ask our client service team for referrals.
    • We recommend providing vaccination records early, so our client service team can ensure we have all of the information necessary to proceed with your appointment.
    • If your pet arrives on surgery day with missing or incomplete vaccine history, or vaccines administered within two weeks of your surgery date, you will be asked to reschedule.

There are no required vaccines for rabbits, rats, or guinea pigs.

  • Scheduling Considerations:

    • You will be assigned a check-in and check-out time for your pet's surgery when you book your appointment. Check-in times are typically between 7am and 7:40am, and check-out times are typically between 3pm and 4pm.
    • You will receive a detailed email with pre-surgical instructions and paperwork three days prior to surgery. We will also call two days before surgery to make sure you received the email and answer any questions you may have about the process or paperwork.
    • Dogs and cats should have no food after midnight the night before surgery.
    • Rabbits, rats, and guinea pigs do not need to fast.
    • In all cases, your pet may drink water as usual.
    • Our client service team will call around mid-day on surgery day to provide you with an update, confirm your check out time, and collect payment over the phone.
  • Post-Surgical Care: A veterinary technician will discuss post-surgical care when you arrive with your pet in on the day of surgery. You will receive written discharge instructions along with your receipt at check out. The brief overview below answers some frequently asked questions, so you will know what to expect and can plan accordingly.

    • Your pet will need to take it easy for 10-14 days post-surgery, with lots of rest at home, away from other pets and children.
      • Dogs should have exercise limited to leash walks only during this time.
      • Cats should be kept indoors.
      • Rabbits should be kept in an environment that is as stress-free as possible, and their appetite should be strictly monitored. Recently spayed female rabbits will need to be kept apart from any male rabbits (whether neutered or not) during this time.
    • We recommend that someone is home with your pet the first evening after surgery. Your pet will be awake and walking, but may still be feeling the effects of anesthesia. Some pets may be restless or vocalize.
    • During the post-surgical recovery period, if you are not actively monitoring your pet you should keep them in a confined space (such as their crate or a single room without access to stairs) and keep the elizabethan collar on to prevent licking or chewing at the incision area.
    • Keep the incision dry for one week, and check it daily for excessive swelling, blood, thick discharge, redness, or pain.
    • There is no follow up appointment needed unless you have concerns. Our veterinarians use a combination of internal, non-removable surgical steel sutures and external, dissolvable sutures or surgical adhesive.
    • A veterinary technician will call or text the day after surgery to ensure your pet is recovering well and answer any questions you have.
  • Safety Net Services: If you need additional financial assistance, you may wish to apply for SHARE - a program providing donor-subsidized discounts to lower the cost of veterinary care through HSBV's Safety Net Services. SHARE is income-based and restricted to residents of Boulder and Broomfield Counties.
