ABOUT THE PROJECT:
Hidden Histories is a live experience that connects you to the underlying beauty and historic riches of this remarkable neighborhood. Through Augmented Reality (AR) technology, your mobile device becomes a gateway to visions inspired by the milestones that shaped Japantown. You will see and interact with the art, which is overlaid on current-day Japantown.
In Fall 2020, nine local artists were commissioned to create augmented reality artwork inspired by stories told by local historians and community leaders. These pieces were unveiled earlier this year. An accompanying exhibit is currently on display at the Japanese American Museum of San Jose. Through the auspices of a grant from the City of San Jose's Abierto Program, we are pleased to offer guided walking tours of the AR artwork scattered throughout the neighborhood.
For more information about the project, please visit: hiddenhistoriesjtown.org.
What to Expect:
After registering, you will be emailed a set of instructions for downloading the AR-vos app and preparing your mobile device.
The tours begin and end at the
Japanese American Museum of San Jose, 535 N. Fifth Street, San Jose, 95112
. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early so that you can double-check the settings of your mobile device.
Your guides will meet you outside of the museum and begin the tour with a short introductory activity.
You will practice using the app, then view 5-6 of the AR pieces together as a group (Note: There are 19 different AR spots to explore. We encourage a return visit!)
There are several different routes that your tour guide may take. Please let them know if you have a specific piece that you want to see. Please also let us know ahead of time if anyone in your party has mobility restrictions. The average tour will cover about 1 mile in 45 minutes.
We will return to the museum for a wrap-up activity. You may also use this time to explore the Hidden Histories rotating exhibit at JAMsj.
After the tour, you are invited to join us for optional lunch/dinner chats at local J-Town restaurants. There you may ask questions to the artists and historians who created the exhibit. Additional details and a sign-up sheet will be available at the beginning of the tour. Tour participants will be responsible for paying for their own meals.
NOTE: Due to the increase in COVID-19 infections in Santa Clara County, we have decided to cancel the lunch portion of the program until further notice. We hope to bring it back when things improve.
Please Note: More-recent smartphones (three years old or newer) should have no problem viewing the exhibit. Some older phones will also work. For best results, we are recommending that you come with family and friends and be sure that someone in your party has a newer phone.
This event is free and open to the public, but donations are welcome! (Suggested donation: $20 per person)
