General Safety:
1. All children under the age of 12 must wear a life jacket on all boats while the engine is on.
2. Adult life jackets are located in the bathroom for BBQ boats, at the stern of 14ft Aluminium boats at the bow of all other boats inside a life jacket bag. It is optional for an adult to wear a life jacket.
3. It is advised that passengers remain seated while the vessel is underway.
4. Do not go on the roof of the BBQ boats.
5. Ensure all doors of the BBQ boat remain closed while underway.
6. Ensure the BBQ boat is kept level while underway (distributing weight and not all moving to one end of the boat).
Parking at Andersons Wharf:
1. Approach the wharf at gentle speed pointing into the current.
2. Put engine into neutral.
3. Loop front rope to wharf, then loop the wharf rope onto the stern bollard.
4. Turn off the engine.
- In the event of a strong southerly wind, it may be too dangerous to park on the end of the wharf. Instead, park in a protected area of the wharf, such as one of the BBQ Boat berths, or drive out towards the mountain at Wagstaff and anchor in the lee of the wind until conditions improve.
Anchoring:
1. Approach the anchorage site at slow speed, pointing into the current.
2. Put engine into neutral.
3. Throw the anchor and rope overboard (the rope is securely secured to the boat).
- In shallow areas, tie off some of the anchor to reduce the length of the rope.
4. Turn off the engine.
- Avoid: Seagrass sites, marked channels, submarine cable locations (marked by large yellow signs on the shore), rocks, and 50m either side of the Rip Bridge.
Parking at another Wharf:
Same as parking at Andersons Wharf, except:
- If there are no bollards, use the anchor rope to tie onto a structure such as the wharf frame, or a wharf post.
- Park on the inside of a public wharf, as ferries tend to use the outside section.
Beaching:
1. Approach beach slowly.
2. Gently nudge the bow onto the sand.
3. Disembark from the sides of the boat, observing the motor to avoid injury.
4. Carry anchor from bow of the boat to beach and lodge into sand.
5. Shorten the anchor rope by tying it off onto the front bollard.
6. If the tide is dropping (running out to sea), periodically reverse the boat off every 30 minutes to ensure that you are not left high and dry (unable to reverse off beach).
- Avoid: rocks, oyster beds, and choppy conditions.
If Anchor is Stuck:
1. Start the engine and drive forward over the anchor, using the momentum of the boat to dislodge the anti-slip anchor.
2. If still stuck, drive North, South, East, and West over the anchor.
3. Call Andersons on 4341 3219.
If Grounded:
1. Start the engine and drive in the direction of deeper water.
2. Direct the passengers to sit on the side of the boat closest to the shallow water, so that the boat leans over. Try again.
3. If on 14ft Aluminium boat, raise the motor into shallow water drive by putting it into forward gear and raising it halfway.
4. Disembark the boat and manually push, or:
5. Call Andersons on 4341 3219.
If Engine Not Starting:
1. Ensure the motor is in neutral.
2. Ensure that the coiled red lanyard is clipped onto the red kill switch, located on the front of the motor.
3. Ensure that the fuel line is connected, both from the fuel tank, and to the engine.
4. Try again with the choke button pulled right out, halfway out, then fully in.
5. Pump the fuel bulb several times and try again.
6. Call Andersons on 4341 3219.
Man Overboard:
1. Slowly approach person in water.
2. Throw Life ring toward person in the water.
3. Pull them toward the boat.
4. Once inside boat place life ring back onto its hook.
Incapacitated Master:
1. Stop the engine via the safety kill switch.
2. Place the anchor into the water.
3. Call Anderson’s Boatshed on 43423219 and wait for further instructions.
4. An Anderson’s team member will come out and assist.
Motor Pops Up:
1. Turn off engine.
2. Put into forward.
3. Operate the lever below the gear change lever.
4. Pull Lever and lift engine up at the same time until it clicks.
5. Drop engine back down, release the lever.
Fire
1. The fire extinguisher is located in the Cabin/Grab Bag/Bathroom (BBQ Boat), under the rear seat, or underneath the front deck of the aluminium boats.
2. Get all occupants off the boat if it is safe to do so.
3. Call 000, then Andersons on 4341 3219.
Other Emergencies:
1. If lives are in danger, call 000 then Andersons on 4341 3219.
If lives are not immediately in danger, call Andersons. We will determine the best course of action.
