A Guide for Understanding the 16 Ministerial Competencies
Appendix 16 is a key document in the processes leading to Commissioning, Ordination (Seminary or Apprentice Track), Recognition of Standing & Ordination, or UCC Partner Standing. Appendix 16 is a tool which helps track a Candidate's progress as they gain knowledge and skills in the sixteen areas of Ministerial Competency.
For a Candidate pursuing Commissioning or Ordination through the Seminary or Apprentice Track, the Ordination Nurture Team (ONT) or Ministry Support Team (MST) use Appendix 16 to track and report on their growth in ministry. Appendix 16 also helps Candidates determine their strengths in ministry as well as areas where growth and skill-building are needed.
As outlined in this document, each of the sixteen Competencies is described in 1-2 brief sentences, followed by a series of benchmarks which further describe the scope of each competency. These benchmarks outline what we expect ministry Candidates to continually work to achieve, understand, or improve on during their Commissioning, Ordination (Seminary or Apprentice Track), Recognition of Standing & Ordination, or UCC Partner Standing process. The sixteen Competencies come recommended by our General Commission on Ministry (GCOM) and are used by all Disciples Regions as an important tool in determinist when or whether a Candidate is prepared to serve as an Ordained or Commissioned Minister within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
