A Guide for Understanding the 16 Ministerial Competencies
Appendix 16 is a key document in the process leading to Commissioning, Ordination (Seminary or Apprentice Track), Recognition of Standing & Ordination, or UCC Partner Standing. Appendix 16 is a tool used to track a Candidate's progress as they gain knowledge and skills in the sixteen areas of Ministerial Competency. The sixteen Competencies come recommended by our General Commission on Ministry (GCOM) and are used by all Disciples Regions as an important tool for determining when or whether a Candidate is prepared to serve as a(n) Commissioned/Ordained Minister within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Mid-America.
The Candidate for Ministry will use Appendix 16 to determine their own strengths in ministry, as well as areas where growth and skill-building are needed. For a Candidate pursuing Commissioning or Ordination through the Seminary or Apprentice Track, the Ministry Support Team (MST) or Ordination Nurture Team (ONT) will use Appendix 16 to track and report on the Candidate's growth in ministry throughout their Commissioning or Ordination journey.
Appendix 16 outlines each of the sixteen Competencies, described in 1-2 brief sentences and followed by a series of benchmarks to further define their scope. These benchmarks outline what is expected of the Candidate to continually work to achieve, understand, or improve on in preparation for Commissioning or Ordination as a Disciples of Christ (DOC) Minister.
