      Saint Mark Product Image
Saint MarkOur St. Mark Icon depicts this well known saint. Converted to Christianity by Saint Peter, Saint Mark accompanied him to Rome, acting as the Apostle's secretary. The Roman people entreated Saint Mark to put in writing Saint Peter's discourses on the life of Christ, which he did under the eye and sanction of Saint Peter, so that some Fathers called the Gospel of Mark "Peter's Gospel." He was sent to Egypt to found the Church of Alexandria, known today as the Coptic Orthodox Church. There he set up the first Christian school, the mother of many doctors and bishops. His disciples were known for their piety and asceticism, so that Saint Jerome speaks of Saint Mark as the father of the anchorites, who later filled the Egyptian deserts. After governing his see for many years, he was seized by the pagans and tortured to death.

After countless doors were slammed in his face, he tried another tactic, slipping little pamphlets he wrote about Catholic doctrine underneath the doors – one of the first instances of religious tracts being used for religious conversion. He is best known for "Introduction to the Devout Life," a book he wrote for to help laypeople in the path of holiness amidst the struggles and demands of their daily lives.

Saint James the Less Product Image
Saint James the LessThis Apostle called "the Younger" or "the Just," named in the lists of the disciples given by Matthew, Mark, and Luke and mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles. He was the son of Alpheus and was known as "the Less" merely as a means of distinguishing him from James the Greater who was older or taller. According to Mark, he stood with the woman Mary and Mary Magdalene at the Crucifixion; he is also called by implication the son of the woman Mary. Little else is known with certainty about him, unless one accepts the view that he is to be identified with St. James, the Brother of the Lord, with whom he is often confused. In liturgical art, he is depicted holding a book or a club. He shares the same feast day as St. Philip.

Fourteen years after Our Lord's death, St. Mary was put in a boat by the Jews without sails or oars - along with Sts. Lazarus and Martha, St. Maximin (who baptized her), St. Sidonius ("the man born blind"), her maid Sera, and the body of St. Anne, the mother of the Blessed Virgin. They were sent drifting out to sea and landed on the shores of Southern France, where St. Mary spent the rest of her life as a contemplative in a cave known as Sainte-Baume. She was given the Holy Eucharist daily by angels as her only food, and died when she was 72. St. Mary was transported miraculously, just before she died, to the chapel of St. Maximin, where she received the last sacraments. In these saint icons she is as is traditionally wearing red

Mary - Our Lady of the Rosary Product Image
Mary - Our Lady of the RosaryHeld securely in the Blessed Mother's arms, the Christ Child holds out the rosary, beckoning us to prayer. The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is one of many in Western and Eastern Christianity that commemorate the Holy Virgin's intercession during a time of strife. In this case, in 1571 the Ottoman Empire was seeking to expanding its reach into Italy, the Atlantic, and possibly the Americas. A Christian navy called the Holy League, gathered from maritime states in southern Europe, sailed to confront the Ottoman Navy. Knowing the Christian forces were at a great disadvantage, Pope Pius V called for all of Europe to pray the Rosary for victory, and led a rosary procession in Rome. The Holy League turned back the Ottomans, and in honor of this victory the Pope instituted the feast of Our Lady of Victory, later renamed to Our Lady of the Rosary and celebrated annually on October 7th.

Mary - Our Lady of Czestochowa Product Image
Mary - Our Lady of CzestochowaWhile many different Virgin Mary icons exist, legend attributes the creation of the icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa to St. Luke, the first Christian iconographer. St. Helena is said to have located the icon during her visit to the Holy Land and brought it to Constantinople in the fourth century. In a critical battle with the Saracens, this icon was displayed from the walls of the city and the Saracens were routed. The icon was eventually owned by Charlemagne and changed hands many times, eventually making its way to Poland. During the reign of St. Ladislaus, King of Poland, in the fifteenth century, the Tartars stole and vandalized the image, but the holy icon was recovered and restored. The legend concerning the two scars on the Black Madonna's right cheek is that the Hussites stormed the monastery where the icon resided in 1430, plundering the sanctuary. Among the items stolen was the icon. After putting it in their wagon, the Hussites tried to get away but their horses refused to move. They threw the portrait down to the ground and one of the plunderers drew his sword upon the image and inflicted two deep strikes. When the robber tried to inflict a third strike, he fell to the ground and writhed in agony until his death. Many times in the following centuries, the Holy Virgin demonstrated her miraculous protection of the Polish people through her icon. The Our Lady of Czestochowa icon is sometimes referred to as the "Black Madonna" because of the black color of the original, caused by age and the accumulated soot of the ages.
