The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International believes the global built environment must join together on a path to a sustainable future that advances the health and wellness of our communities, ensures economic competitiveness, and protects our environment. This future is achievable if we act together—as a society and as an industry--to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in a deliberate and responsible manner.
Commercial real estate can play an essential role in identifying and supporting solutions that effectively reduce carbon emissions and that make strategic business sense. As significant downstream users of energy, we believe these solutions must promote abundant, clean energy while providing affordable energy choices. In the absence of consistent and effective governmental policies on emissions, we believe these solutions must avoid costly and ineffective mandates, and instead promote flexibility in the implementation of reduction strategies that are economically viable and produce measurable progress.
BOMA International is committed to playing a leadership role in developing and applying carbon reduction strategies to assist commercial real estate in meeting national and international emissions goals. We intend to identify leading industry best practices and public policy recommendations and apply these solutions to the built environment in a comprehensive and measurable manner. To that end, BOMA International further commits to:
- Develop a consultative document that serves as a global clearing house of resources and best practices on carbon reduction for the CRE industry, and;
- Launch a carbon reduction challenge program that produces widespread industry commitments and demonstrable results.
