    Audition Exam for Aural Skills and Music Theory
  • Instructions

    You will need access to a printer and a computer that has the ability to take a picture. If this is a barrier to you completing the exam, please email Adam Hill for assistance (ashill@hollandcollege.com). When you finish the exam, the results are automatically sent to a Music instructor for grading. They will contact you with the results of your exam. If you do not achieve a score of 80% or higher you will be able to retake the exam at a later date.

  • Part 1- Aural Skills Component (Ear Training)

  • 1.1 Identify the TYPE of SCALE played. The possibilities are major, harmonic minor, melodic minor, pentatonic, natural minor, or chromatic. You will hear each scale played in ascending and descending order. Choose the correct answer for the type of scale in the dropdown directly BELOW it.

  • 1.2. Identify the TYPE of CHORD played. You will hear the root played 4 times before the chord begins. The possibilities are major triad, minor triad, diminished triad, augmented triad, or dominant 7th chord. Choose the correct answer for the type of chord in the dropdown directly BELOW it.

  • 1.5. Notate the 4 bar RHYTHM played for you. The time signature is 2/4. The metronome is set at 80 bpm. Add barlines where needed.

  • 1.6. Notate the treble clef MELODY played for you. Add the treble clef to the staff. The melody is 4 bars long, is in 4/4 time, and begins with a half note on F (DOH) above middle C. A metronome will provide the quarter note pulse at 80 BPM. Write in the key signature and any required accidentals.
