  • Code of Conduct

  • The purpose of this policy is to clearly define our expectations for all youth sailors, coaches, and parents, and to ensure the health,
    safety, and rights of all participants in the program. You are ambassadors for your sailing team, your high school, and your community.
    As such, we expect you to conduct yourself with dignity and respect at all times, to practice fair and ethical behavior on and off the race course, and to represent Whatcom Community Sailing in a way that will make us all proud. By accepting the privilege and
    responsibility of participating in this program, all participants agree to comply with the following Code of Conduct:
    Youth Sailors will:

    1. Cooperate with the decisions and directions of coaches and parent chaperones at all times.
    2. Comply with all rules and policies of the event hosting organization.
    3. Attend, and be on time to, all event activities required for team members.
    4. Treat all team members, competitors, coaches, adult chaperones, and program staff with courtesy, honesty, and respect at all times.
    5. Never engage in unsportsmanlike conduct, physical contact, harassment, or abusive behavior. This includes inappropriate language and swearing.
    6. Treat all property, equipment, and facilities with care and respect, and recognize that you will be held financially liable for your actions if loss or damage results from your negligence.
    7. Refrain from the use, possession, and/or distribution of alcohol, tobacco, or controlled substances at all times.
    8. Travel to and from all regattas and event activities with the team or group. Participants shall not drive without a parent or coach present in their vehicle. Exceptions can only be made with approval of the supervising coach or parent.
    9. Stay with the group at all times unless you have been given permission to leave from a supervising coach or parent, in which case you will provide complete details as to your whereabouts, return time, and contact information while away.
    10. Bring adequate funds to cover all personal expenses while traveling, including meals not provided in the event package.
    11. Show respect for your event hosts and colleagues by thoroughly cleaning up any equipment, facilities, or areas you have used prior to leaving.
    12. Wear an appropiate mask (as required) at all times while at practice, regattas, or Whatcom Sailing events.

    Parent/Guardians will:

    1. Ensure that you and your child has read, understood, and promised to comply with the code of conduct detailed above.
    2. Support your child’s participation in this program by cooperating with the requests and directions of the coaches and program directors.
    3. Ensure that your child has adequate funds to provide for personal expenses and meals not provided in regatta event package.
    4. Take financial responsibility for your child’s actions while practicing or away at regattas.

    Disciplinary Action:

    This code of conduct shall apply to all participants at all times from beginning to conclusion of the event and any related travel.
    Participants are expected to comply with both the letter and the spirit of these rules, and violation of any rule will result in serious
    consequences. Disciplinary action for failure to comply will be at the discretion of the supervising coach or chaperone, and may include one or more of the following:

    • Suspension of the participant’s right to participate in the program or event.
    • Withdrawal of the participant from the program or event and immediate return home at parent’s expense.
    • Restriction from further participation in Whatcom Community Sailing activities for the remainder of the season.

    In consideration of my child participating in Whatcom Community Sailing, I agree to accept the risks and injury to my child, to hold the officers, directors, employees, coaches, and members harmless from any claims of any nature whatsoever arising out of the activities of the High School Sailing Program.

  • I recognize sailing can be a hazardous sport which can result in serious injury or death. I accept the risks inherent in sailing and its environment, and I accept full responsibility for all medical expenses and claims incurred as a result of my participation in any activity of Whatcom Community Sailing (WCS) the Bellingham School District (BSD), and the Bellingham Yacht Club (BYC). I also agree to release, hold harmless and indemnify WCS, BSD, & BYC, its officers, shareholders, directors, agents, employees, coaches, and insurers for any claims for personal injury or property damage resulting from any cause including negligence, which arise out of participation in WCS, BSD, & BYC activities. This release is binding on me and all other persons, including family members, heirs and executors. This release does not apply to gross negligence or intentional acts of WCS, BSD, & BYC. All rights and responsibilities of the parties will be governed by Washington law, and any claims between the parties may be filed only in Whatcom County District Court. My signature below means that I have read, understood, and agree to the above terms and conditions.
