Arts Gowanus and the Old Stone House & Washington Park (OSH) are currently accepting submissions for Brooklyn Utopias: Along the Canal, a gallery and public outdoor exhibition inviting artists to consider what a “Utopia” would look like for the communities of the neighborhoods bordering the Gowanus Canal. These include Gowanus, Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill, and Red Hook.
Artists and community members have long been focused on making Brooklyn a better place. What does “Utopia” look like for the communities of the neighborhoods bordering the Gowanus Canal? The idea of utopia, defined as an ideal place or state, or any visionary system of political, social, environmental, or moral perfection is the current theme of the new banner show we are currently accepting submissions for!
We are curious about the ways in which your personal experiences in your community may reflect your ideas about what utopia-either a current one or one the future-looks like in the neighborhoods surrounding the Gowanus Canal.
This means that work in this show can either depict the parts of our community-like your family, friends, your favorite buildings, your favorite streets, your favorite trees-that make you feel like these neighborhoods are already a utopia, or can depict what you think these areas will look like in a perfect future. In a rapidly changing Brooklyn, we seek to highlight the resilience and joy we experience as we look towards creating a more equitable and inclusive future.
