• Summer '22 Delegation

  • Join CJNV for 10 days of nonviolent direct action, coresistance and solidarity in Israel-Palestine. We will be working with partners across Israel-Palestine.

The delegation will take place in early June 2022 (specific dates once you apply. If you are accepted and it turns out the dates do not work for you, we will hold your application for our next delegation).

If you have applied in the past, we need your updated information but you do not need to rewrite your short answer responses unless there are noteworthy changes. You can simply write, "applied in the past".

    ______

It has been two years since our last delegation due to the travel restrictions of COVID. During this break in international travel, the situation on the ground has worsened and intensified in so many ways. Settler violence has been at historic levels, home demolitions have continued unabated, and all the while settlements and their associated infrastructure have spread and deepened across the West Bank. This past May, there was also a flare-up in tensions as Israel again attacked Gaza and protest spread across Israel-Palestine.

While travel was limited, we had many conversations with our partners about how we could continue showing up in solidarity and Hineinu: A Sustained Solidarity Presence was launched. Now that travel seems to be easing, we are thrilled to once again be planning for a delegation. Hineinu brought our relatoinships in the South Hebron Hills to a new level. This delegation will enter into that landscape and continue to broach powerful coresistance and solidarity between Jews and Palestinians in Israel-Palestine.

We believe that relationships rooted in deep solidarity and co-resistance between Palestinians, Israelis, and Jews from around the world will disrupt and destabilize the material and ideological systems that uphold the Israeli Occupation. Systems which harm communities on both sides of the Green Line, Palestinian and Israeli. We have seen these resistive relationships transform what is possible in our actions and in each of us, shifting movement landscapes and upending injustice.

On the ground, the network of civil resistance is rooting in the possibilities of this historical moment – where people power binds us together and breaks us out of the status quo. This is a moment to choose each other: to link arms, protect land, and build collective power.

    All we need is you.

When we come together as a part of a network of joint civil resistance – across different identities, privileges and proximities to power – we manifest new realities and possibilities, powerfully countering the Occupation and the divide and conquer narratives which sustain it.

We invite multiple perspectives, approaches, beliefs and political ideologies, and we seek to cultivate dialogue and negotiation about these differences. Those affiliated with CJNV take a variety of positions on the Right of Return, BDS, solutions, Zionism, etc. We come together under a common banner of solidarity and co-resistance. We believe that in coming together across these differences we gain greater collective power, and we challenge and push each other to become fuller and more developed justice-seekers. We know this isn’t always easy and requires us to be in deep and vulnerable relationship with each other.

Our participating activists represent many genders, sexualities, races, nationalities, socio-economic classes, ages, levels of formal education, forms of religious observance, abilities and organizational affiliations. We embrace this diversity and expect that all participating activists will act with openness and respect toward all other participating activists at all times.

We are developing plans and contingencies that account for various circumstances and will be in active conversation with each person interested in the delegation. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.

For the safety of our participants and partners, we require proof of full vaccination for all participants and uphold covid safety practices that align with CDC and Israel and Palestinian Health Ministry recommendations. COVID practice and protocol will be discussed ahead of the delegation.

As we continue to navigate the pandemic-related changes, CJNV will communicate any changes in a timely manner.

  • Basic Information

  • Values Checklist

  • Community Agreements

During our time together on the ground, we will have the opportunity to build meaningful cross-movement connections in the service of showing up for and with our Palestinian and Israeli partners resisting the Occupation. To do so, we uphold our highest values of equity and justice for all people in our work and within the CJNV community. Cultivating a culture that rejects oppression in all its forms and uplifts a beautiful spectrum of identities within the Jewish community and beyond is critical to fulfilling our mission of transformation. During CJNV delegations, holding ourselves accountable to our values enables us to be effective allies to our partners and maintain a safe and thriving environment for all participants.

Please read through the community agreements, intentions and expectations that speak to the transformative culture we invite you to be a part of creating. We ask that all applicants agree to respect and uphold the following prior to committing to join a CJNV delegation. We recognize that even with set agreements, breaches and harm can still occur, and we are committed to addressing any issues that arise from a place of tikkun and teshuva--repair and restoration--when possible. If you have any questions about any of this or would like to discuss further with someone on our team, please just let us know.

  • Passport Information

(All passports must be valid for at least six months from the date you are departing Israel-Palestine)

  • General Questions

  • Motivation for Participation

  • Personal and Professional Background

The purpose of this section is to learn a little about your professional background, community connections and organizational affiliations. We recognize that your day-job is not the entirety of who you are, whether you work outside the home, are unemployed, are a full-time parent, are a student or retired. Please answer in a way that is applicable to your life.

  • Your unique skills, contributions and leadership

All participating activists will have the opportunity to support the project in their own unique way. Please let us know what skills and interests you have that might strengthen this delegation (media, group facilitation, medical training, photography, etc). We are especially looking for people who have video/editing experience or medical training.

  • Language Skills

Arabic and/or Hebrew knowledge are helpful for communicating with our partners on-the-ground (particularly Arabic).

  • Workshop Proposals

We believe that learning, reflecting and skill-sharing is a vital component to building vibrant networks of resistance. As part of our time together, we will look at histories, strategies, and tactics related to our work, including nonviolent direct action training and legal briefing. We will also provide time and space in the evenings for participant-led workshops. We invite participating activists to propose a paper, panel, skill-share, workshop, presentation, facilitated discussion, text-study, or performance (or something else entirely!) to share with the group. Proposals should in some way be related to the work of the delegation, and we encourage you to take this as an opportunity to share with and build our movement. Submitting a proposal is encouraged but optional.

  • Physical & Emotional Preparedness

Days during the delegation are long! Some days will involve many hours outside in the heat and some activities may include physical labor. Participating activists will likely be climbing staircases without railings, walking on dirt roads and/or cobblestone streets, and getting on and off buses multiple times a day. No one will be asked to over-exert themselves, and participating activists will be encouraged to set a work and walking pace that is comfortable for them.

Additionally, spending 10 days in a group of new people under intense political conditions can be emotionally draining.

We are committed to creating an environment that is comfortable, safe and supportive for all participating activists, but individuals must decide for themselves if this kind of activity is within their capability.

  • Food

  • Shabbat

  • Health Waiver

We *strongly recommend* that all participating activists carry health and travelers' insurance. Your provider may cover you (you should ask!), or you can purchase third-party insurance from a provider like Seven Corners. The Center for Jewish Nonviolence does not take responsibility for any medical or travel-related insurance costs during or as a result of participation.

  • Commitments

Participation in this delegation requires advance preparation with the group and follow-up afterwards.

  • Cost

Fee for participation is offered on a sliding scale. The program cost is all-inclusive and subsidized. Fees cover housing, transportation, food, insurance, projects, training, and supplies. Please note that the cost DOES NOT include airfare. Participating activists are responsible for making their own international travel arrangements to and from the region.

Scholarship rate is $1800, which is a $600 scholarship from the Base Rate. This is a subsidized rate that we offer in an effort to make this important solidarity work financially accessible both for us as an organization and for interested activists. There are a limited number of scholarships available beyond this rate. If you would like to inquire about these please note below. The maximum scholarship we offer beyond this rate is $1000, meaning your total cost would be $800. Please, don’t hesitate to reach out to CJNV staff about payment options.

Base rate is $2400. This rate covers program costs such as housing, food, transportation on the ground, and equipment, but it does not cover CJNV’s operational expenses.

Solidarity rate is $3200. This rate covers program costs and contributes toward CJNV's operational expenses, as well as supporting our scholarship fund for participating activists. We ask all those who are able to pay the solidarity rate to help subsidize the cost of participation for those with fewer financial resources.

CJNV is committed to making solidarity activism financially accessible. We do not turn participants away based on ability to pay, though we do ask that participants pay as close to the top of the slide scale as is possible for them. Our sliding scale programming is sustained by grassroots fundraising and volunteer support. If you are unable to pay any of these rates, please be in touch.

Participating activists are encouraged to utilize grassroots sources and online crowd-fundraising to help offset the costs of their participation. In the past, participating activists have been able to raise the entire cost of their program through these platforms. CJNV organizers will support individuals with their grassroots and online fundraising initiatives.
