First Americans Museum seeks proposals from qualified instructors for its inaugural season of FAMcamps, offered to students in grades K-8 through June and July. Instructors will work on a contract basis with FAM to develop their own curricula and facilitate a weeklong work on the topics of First American arts and culture, STEM, or health and wellness. Instructors should have significant content knowledge in the topic they address, previous experience working with youth, and strong cultural competency skills and knowledge of the 39 tribes in Oklahoma. Camps take place Monday through Friday from 9-4, with a break for lunch for instructors.
Compensation: Instructors are paid a competitive stipend per weeklong camp on a contract basis and receive a budget for purchasing materials and booking guest speakers for the course. Instructors will have help from part-time teaching assistants throughout their course. Instructors are welcome to submit multiple proposals to teach more than one course.
Ideal proposals will include:
- A strong thematic focus (i.e., Exploring Native Botany, Decolonize Your Dinnerplate, Native Haute Couture, Beadwork Bonanza)
- Focus on project-based learning and open-ended activities, rather than a focus on “make and take” or kit-based projects
- An emphasis on the diversity of the 39 tribes in Oklahoma, rather than pan-Indian fallacies
- Activities that demonstrate the relevance of Indigenous perspectives and knowledge to contemporary culture and/or academic disciplines
- Culturally competent lessons and activities that are appropriate for both Native and non-Native participants
