Mindful Emotion Coaching is a coaching technique created by Dr Sarah Temple that fits within EHCAP's broader Family Wellness Programme. Copyright EHCAP Ltd 2022. Sarah draws on her experience as a GP to share this neurodiversity inclusive, trauma-informed approach which has a quality award with the European Mentoring and Coaching Council and accreditation by the Personalised Care Institute. Sarah merges learning from Anda and Felitti’s seminal study on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) with research on the physiological changes that can occur when babies and children are exposed to toxic stress. She shares how we can learn to hold different conversations that enable awareness of this science as well as deepening understanding of how we can respond to it. The approach skills learners to feel able to hold coaching style conversations with adult caregivers and work with them to build core life skills in emotion inteligence, emotion literacy and executive function. in order that in turn they are able to make healthier lifestyle choices including - where appropriate parenting their children more effectively. The process of coaching encourages people to tap into and grow their internal resources- this coaching programme has addditional resources that enable understanding of emotions and how our emotions may influence our behaviour.
The Programme has a European Quality Award (EQA) from the EMCC which means that once you have completed the course you can access a certificate with an EQA from the EMCC and prepare to register with the EMCC as a coach.
Mindful Emotion Coaching supports professionals, parents, carers , children, young people and families develop insight into their own emotional world.

An Indicative Example (will need to be modified to fit local circumstances) of training as a foundation level coach.
Jane is a Family Support Worker working within Services for Children and Families. She will previously have undertaken both child and adult safeguarding training and GDPR training (in this case Jane and her employer are responsible for ensuring compliance prior to joining the course). In addition, she will need to prepare for this EMCC Global EQA Foundation programme by completing the EHCAP beginner level e-learning. Once she has completed the beginner e-learning she is ready to begin this coaching programme.
In month 1 (of the suggested four months) she will need to access the Foundation level e-learning, read the Programme Manual, familiarise herself with EHCAP’s online resources and begin embedding her understanding of the psycho-education tools EHCAP promotes by sharing them with colleagues, friends and family. If she has joined as part of a group, she will also attend a one-hour video-link group learning activity provided by EHCAP, in which she will have the opportunity to ask questions.
In months 2, 3 and 4 she will engage with at least one adult, young person or family offering a minimum of four 45-minute online coaching sessions. After each coaching session she will need 45 minutes to write up her coaching session notes in a GDPR-compatible format and to reflect on the session.
Within a week of completing the first of her coaching sessions Jane will access coaching mentoring from EHCAP. The coaching mentoring will last 45 minutes and will include feedback from the coaching mentor on her interaction with coachees, as well as discussion of case examples of managing difficult emotions using the science and psycho-education tools described in this Programme Manual. With the coaching mentor, Jane will also discuss at least two self-care practices. Jane will have 45 minutes to reflect on the coaching mentoring session and write up her notes.
Jane will have the opportunity to feed back her thoughts and feelings about the
coaching programme after each session of coaching mentoring with EHCAP. This will be via a GDPR-compliant online form.
Jane will need an additional two hours for administration and organisation, setting up and recording coaching and coaching mentoring, organising reflections and materials.
Once Jane has completed the requirements for her EMCC EQA in Mindful Emotion
Coaching she will be sent a certificate of confirmation.
To progress beyond the EQA and work toward EIA, Jane will need to join a team coaching group, write a Personal Statement and record a summary record of her coaching practice, requiring a minimum of one year’s experience as a coach, 50 hours of client contact, five clients with feedback, 16 hours per year of Continuous Professional Development (CPD), hour per quarter coaching supervision and five items of reflection on practice.
Once Jane has successfully completed all elements of the EMCC Global Foundation level programme, and the Training Provider has submitted the cohort graduate to EMCC Global with the Individual Accreditation (EIA) recommendation, Jane will be able to pay the EMCC for her Individual Accreditation at Foundation level via EMCC Global. Jane will need to maintain her professional knowledge and practice (client record, reflection, coaching supervision, CPD, knowledge, skills and behaviours), in preparation for renewal or upgrade of the EMCC Global EIA within five years.
Quote from Vickie- Mum of four children
'I honestly can't explain just how life changing the introduction of mindful emotion coaching has been to my family and I. In the summer of 2020 I found an 'All emotions are ok' webinar, and after learning about the effects of different kinds of stress, I felt compelled to give emotion coaching a go. I soon found that leading the way with modelling my own emotional regulation was key, and although it wasn't always easy, over time it became easier to remain calm and choose an emotion coaching response in those challenging moments. I found that teaching the children to tune into the physical sensation in their bodies helped massively. The children became aware of their own personal signals and learnt to notice their stress sooner and while it was at a more manageable level. The children's emotional literacy also developed significantly. One of my children went from only being able to identify good and bad feelings, to being able to identify and label complex emotions like shame, resentment and compassion.
After seeing for myself how effective emotion coaching can be I strongly feel that this information should reach everyone. Having the science explained in a sensitive and palatable way helped me to understand the sheer importance of buffering the results of stress with these kinds of nurturing relationships. My wish would be for every child to receive this kind emotion coaching approach in all areas of their life. At home, in school and in all professional services. If we model and provide the correct environment together, we can make a real difference in the lives of children today and the health of future generations'.
