    Application of unit:

    This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work in a manner that is healthy and safe in relation to self and others, and to assist in responding to incidents. It covers following work health and safety (WHS) policies, procedures, instructions and requirements; and participating in WHS consultative processes.

    The unit applies to those who require a basic knowledge of WHS to carry out own work in a defined context, under direct supervision or with some individual responsibility, in a range of industry and workplace contexts.

    NOTES

    1.     The terms ‘occupational health and safety’ (OHS) and ‘work health and safety’ (WHS) are equivalent, and generally either can be used in the workplace. In jurisdictions where model WHS laws have not been implemented, registered training organisations (RTOs) are advised to contextualise this unit of competency by referring to existing WHS legislative requirements.

    2.     The model WHS laws include the model WHS Act, model WHS Regulations and model WHS Codes of Practice. See Safe Work Australia for further information.

    The Work Based Activities test your practical skills and knowledge. You may need to review your learning resources to answer some of these activities. The learning resource for this competency unit(s) is contained in this online document. The assessment contains a combination of multiple-choice, drop-down boxes and short answer questions.

    Section (2) Assignment: Contained in this document

    The Assignment tests your knowledge in this competency unit(s). You may need to review your learning resources to answer some of these assessment questions. The assignment is a combination of multiple choice, true/false and short answer questions.

    Section (3) Workplace Assessment: Your course trainer/assessor retains your Workplace assessment book

    The workplace assessment is focused on the skills you are required to demonstrate as part of this competency unit. Your skills must be demonstrated in a fully functional simulated work environment.

    Section (4) Third Party Evidence: Your course trainer/assessor provides this to your supervisor

    Your supervisor is required to support the outcomes of your assessment by reviewing (with you) and signing the Third-Party Evidence.

     

    Learning Logbook: Your Learning Logbook is required to keep track of the number of Learning hours for your qualification. The final page of this assessment asks you to provide information on the number of Learning hours which include your hours of employment for the last 4 weeks.

    You are the relief supervisor at Timbuktu train station for 4 weeks. There have been THREE (3) people off work on workers compensation in the last month.

    1. George Parker had a slip and fall and hurt his hip. You are not sure when he will be returning to work. He has been off for THREE (3) weeks already. George was not wearing the correct shoes when he fell over on a wet floor when cleaning the bathroom.  George reported the incident to his supervisor the next day and took himself to see his local doctor (Dr Smith).

    2. Anna has a sore shoulder and had THREE (3) days off work. She thinks she hurt her shoulder while lifting garbage into the large bin outside.

    3. Peter is experiencing ringing in the ears. He had ONE (1) week off work. Peter has not been wearing hearing protection when using the cleaning equipment.
     

    You have been asked to investigate why these accidents occurred (what went wrong), and also how to work with your team to address the problems (how could you reduce the risk and stop it from happening again).

  • About Safe Work Australia 

    Safe Work Australia is an Australian government statutory body established in 2008 to develop national policy relating to WHS and workers’ compensation.

    Safe Work Australia is jointly funded by the Commonwealth, state and territory governments through an Intergovernmental Agreement.

    Safe Work Australia works in partnership with governments, employers and employees—to drive national policy development on WHS and workers’ compensation matters. Safe Work Australia work to:

    • develop and evaluate national policy and strategies
    • develop and evaluate the model WHS legislative framework
    • undertake research, and
    • collect, analyse and report data.

    As a national policy body, Safe Work Australia does not regulate WHS laws. The Commonwealth, states and territories retain responsibility for regulating and enforcing WHS laws in their jurisdictions.

    The key functions of Safe Work Australia are to develop strategies to improve workplace safety across all industries in Australia.

  • SECTION (3) Workplace Assessment

  • Your workplace assessment will be completed after you submit this document.

    For this assessment, you are required to demonstrate that you work safely and in accordance with WHS legislation and organisational procedures.

    This competency must be assessed by observing TWO (2) different cleaning tasks.

    At least ONE (1) of these cleaning tasks should involve cleaning above 1.8 metres in height.

     

    You can download a copy of your Workplace Assessment for this competency unit. No need to print. Your Trainer will contact you and arrange an appropriate time to conduct the observation after your assignment has been completed.

     

  • Learning Logbook

  • As part of your course, you will be required to keep a workplace Logbook of your learning and practice for your qualification. You will be asked to complete this time log at the end of ALL your assessments.

    Your workplace learning is made up of:

    ·         the time you attend training session

    ·         time for reading your Learning Materials

    ·         time for practicing the learning activities in your Learning Materials

    ·         time you spend on relevant workplace task which are applicable to the competency unit or units you are studying.
