• AUDITION HELP 101: PERFORMER'S RESUMÉ

"Being prepared is always beneficial. Although there may not be any casting calls at a present moment, it is advisable to have your head shot and resume ready and easily accessible while continuing to increase your experience in your art. In the event that you hear of an audition on short notice, you'd already have your documents ready. Writing a performer's resume is sometimes one of the most tedious tasks of the audition process, so having one already prepared and up to date will allow you to spend more time on perfecting your audition piece. A performer's resume is your single greatest tool when marketing yourself. The goal is to tell them who you are, and what you can do as a performer. All on one page. Casting directors will have a lot of these to go through so the easier you make their work for them the more likely they will be in a pleasant disposition when you face them at the casting table." ~ Triston Wallace

  • PERFORMER'S RESUMÉ: EXPERIENCE/ CREDITS

"Your résumé should be one page length and specific to the job you are applying for. i.e. If you are submitting your résumé for a dancer's casting or print ad, directors do not need to know your experience as a vocalist. However, depending on the type of show you are auditioning for eg. in musical theatre, your credits in other fields may be valuable information. Use your discretion and only submit what is relevant. Do not feel pressured to list everything you have done. Casting directors want to be able to deduce the relevant information about you in a second and having a long résumé would prob put you to the bottom of the pile so they can "read later" If they ever pick it back up again.Directors are not necessarily impressed by how much you've done, they only care if your work is good. NB: Enter your credits in reverse chronological order i.e. listing the most recent first, until you have enough experience to list your most impressive roles at the top)" ~ Triston Wallace

  • NO EXPERIENCE? Well everyone has to start somewhere...

"If you have no experience, then find a community theatre, choir or performing arts group and ask to join. Or volunteer to be in a student film. Or become a movie extra. Whatever you do, don't lie on your actor resume. You will get caught and because acting is a small industry, you'll be black-listed. Trust me, I've seen it happen. How you present your experience is also very valuable. Chances are, you've done some acting somewhere. In high school, or an acting class, or a high school acting class, whatever the case... So be proud of your accomplishments. Have confidence in yourself." ~ace-your-audition.com

  • NO MODELING EXPERIENCE?

"Don’t be freaked-out if you’re brand new! There are things you have done that would probably be appropriate for a talent resume even if you haven’t been on a runway. Have you had any workshops or experience in acting, dance, film, fashion design? Do you speak any other languages? What are your interests and other talents? If you are just beginning, you need to really rack your brain for things in your life that you think would apply to the industry. As you can see there is a lot of flexibility. If you don’t have ANY of these types of things, and you are very young, you could just include a list of your statistics, well formatted, and your activities and interests. Attend acting school. This can be beneficial for models and actors alike, since both careers rely on poise and self-presentation, as well as manipulation and control of the body and facial features. Acting school can be helpful even if you are naturally gifted, since professional coaching can bring out your strengths. Be proud of your accomplishments. Have confidence in yourself.

  • PERFORMER'S RESUMÉ: HEAD SHOT

The whole purpose of your headshots is to get you the opportunities that will open the doors to auditions and work. Headshots are the primary tool for models, actors and performers to promote themselves. Without a good set of head shots you may not be able to go very far.The photo should not be a school photo, glamour shot or a snapshot taken by a non-professional photographer. The photo should be 8" x 10" in color or grey scale (though I always prefer color) and professionally taken. Just remember that your photo is your calling card. it should represent the real you, the way you look in everyday life. Always keep your photos up-to-date according to your look. Do you currently have a different look than represented in your head shot? Gained or lost significant amounts of weight? Hair length and color drastically changed? Then you are in need of a new head shot.
