Creating and Submitting a New AY Honor
Creating a new NAD AY Honor proposal is not an "easy Sunday afternoon" activity. It requires a significant amount of time and other resources and must be evaluated at many stages as to whether the proposal is valid for an audience that encompasses the entire North American Division (United States, Canada, St. Pierre and Miquelon, Bermuda, Guam, North Mariana Islands, Palau, The Marshall Islands, Wake Island, and the Federated States of Micronesia).

In nearly 100 years of AY Honor development, about 600 honors have been approved. Thus, reaching that level of excellence is a special "honor." However, as is evidenced by an honor's comparative scarcity, not all fun activities, skills or lessons are "worthy" to become AY Honors.

Summary of the steps for an honor submission
1. Develop the following to send to the NAD AY Honors Task Force for honor pre-approval:
  - Philosophy Statement
  - List of Objectives
  - Statement of Value
2. Meet virtually with the Task Force to pitch your idea. If the Task Force pre-approves the honor concept, then develop the following:
  - Requirements
  - Answer Key
  - Lesson Plan
  - Patch Design
3. Pilot the honor requirements with different clubs. Gather information, assess, evaluate, tweak, modify based on piloting results and recommendations.
4. Send all supporting documentation to the Task Force for final approval.

We want to maximize the time and energy expended on the actual development of an honor. Therefore, the pre-approval process is an essential step before creating a complete honor to be able to verify quality and the perceived need for an honor of the type proposed. The NAD AY Honors Task Force knows how much effort is invested in honor development and wants to be sure you don't waste any time!

Before working on writing requirements, designing a patch, or piloting with clubs, all honor proposals should be preceded by a:
- Philosophy Statement
- List of Objectives
- Statement of Value

List of Objectives

AY Honors give the participants the opportunity to investigate different ideas of knowledge and skills. In this list, state what the participants will know and be able to demonstrate by the time they have completed and earned the honor.
KNOW: What should the participants already know or be aware of before beginning your proposed honor?*
WANT: What do the participants want to learn about this topic?*
LEARN: What will the participants learn by the end of the process about this subject?*

Statement of Value

Essentially, this is where you answer the question of why your honor proposal should be approved! How is your proposal going to make a difference for Youth Ministry? Why do you feel this proposal is "valuable enough" to be included as an AY Honor? What makes it stand out from other possible honor topics?
The primary goal of the scope and sequence in AY honors is to:
- Create balance of theory and hands-on experiences.
- Determine teaching time-frames.
- Avoid repetition with pre-existing honor requirements.
- Promote different learning styles and modes.
- Consider a broad base of life experiences.
- Provide skills and experiences with a long-term value.
- Take into account urban, suburban, and rural locations, as well as a variety of cultural environments.
- Encourage environmentally-friendly ideals.
- Never promote violence.

Honor Token Shapes

Since 1996, it has been NAD policy that only NAD/GC approved honors use the oval token shape. All club, conference, and union honor tokens are to be a diamond shape of the same width and height of the standard oval. Background colors should match the NAD/GC standard for the category. Please refer to page 10 of the Uniform Policy PDF.
