Monday March 14th - Theme: Snow Snakes and Other Herptiles. Have you ever seen a Snow Snake? Most snakes and other herptiles hibernate for the Winter months but not Snow Snakes. Let's explore the story of Saunder the Snow Snake and learn how this snake not only survives the Winter but thrives in it! The game of Snow Snakes is a traditional game, played by different First Nations and Inuit communities. Campers will have a chance to learn the tradition of this game, how to play it, and will get a chance to make a Snow Snake of their own.
Tuesday March 15th - Theme: Tracks and Scat. Do you like to solve mysteries? Maybe you like to find hidden treasures? Winter is one of the best seasons to find clues about the Forest and who lives here at Mac Johnson, The snow let's us track who lives here, where they are going, and what they might be up to. Today, you can learn how to identify these animals by acting like them. Can you walk the walk of a fox? A deer? A field mouse? Join us as we follow their tracks and find hidden treasures in the forest. We will host a great Animal Scavenger Hunt, complete with prizes and special treats.
Wednesday March 16th - Theme: Winter Travel. Let's pull out the snowshoes, the toboggans, and the skis, as we experiment with the best ways to travel across the snowy trails at Mac Johnson. We ask campers to bring a cardboard box or two, as we put our creativity to the test and build our own toboggans. Get ready? Get set! Go!
Thursday March 17th - Theme: Winter Camping. What do you think of when you hear "Winter Camping"? Yep, it is a real thing and we are going to learn all about it. Today will be packed full of adventure, as we use compasses to navigate the trails, set up a REAL campsite, enjoy a cookout, and build shelters of our own. You will learn about what works best as insulation and how best to stay dry. We invite campers to bring food they can cook on the fire or something warm they can enjoy outside.
Friday March 18th - Theme: Spring and Things. Spring is just around the corner. The ice and snow are beginning to melt and you may have even noticed some bugs moving around. It isn't too long before the Spring Peppers will be chirping and the birds will return home. Let's investigate what is causing all of these changes and what this means for the Forest, Ponds, and Fields of Mac Johnson. Weather permitting, we will go bug collecting and make bee hotels that can help attract pollinators to your garden. You can even start your own Greenhouse today!
