  • QUALIFICATIONS

The Diversity in Arts Leadership internship program is a paid ($4,500 stipend), intensive summer experience designed to promote cultural equity in the arts management field and seeks candidates from backgrounds underrepresented in arts leadership.  In its review of candidates, we will give preference to these applicants.

Eligible applicants must fulfill the following criteria:

    • be available during the entire length of the program, June 6 - August 11, 2022
    • be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at the time of application
    • be able to provide Employment Eligibility Verification

Candidates should also be able to demonstrate:

    • A strong interest in an arts management career
    • Have coursework, professional work, and/or extracurriculars relevant to this specific internship
    • A commitment to advancing cultural equity
    • A background underrepresented in arts leadership

Please note that this year's DIAL internship may be in-person or hybrid; your internship placement would still be with a Sarasota/Manatee based organization. Programmatic and working capacities may shift to support a hybrid model.

  • HOW TO APPLY

As we look to support interns on their journey to a thriving career in arts management and the pursuit of cultural equity in the arts, AFTA recognizes that injustices against particular groups have preventted their full participation in the economic, social and cultural traditions of a society.  Through DIAL, we strive to create more equitable outcomes in the arts management field by opening doors for people who look like our country, live in and come from all places, and who will sustainably lead communities towards change through the transformattive power of the arts.  Please use this application form and your cover letter to tell us about yourself and to help us make the best possible matches.

  • RESUME: Upload your resume while completing the online application.

  • COVER LETTER:  Please copy and paste your cover letter in the application. In your cover letter please answer the following questions:

    • Tell us the specific experiences or skills you possess that have prepared you most for the Diversity in Arts Leadership Internship Program (what makes you stand out)?
    • If you were to receive this internship, how might it help you?
    • Why is now the best time for you to participate in this program?
  • DEADLINE: Any applications submitted after the final deadline of January 28, 2022 may not be reviewed.

  • Background and Demographic Information: Please complete every category as completely as possible. AFTA convenes a class of interns who have varied interests and goals.

  • REVIEW PROCESS

Applicants who successfully complete an application according to the guidelines above and move to the interview round will be notified via email about scheduling a 30-minute conversation with staff before February 25th.

  • TIPS

Many of these may seem like no-brainers, but we want to give everyone the opportunity to ace the application process.

    • Double-check your spelling and grammar and have at least one other person review your application.
    • As much as we want to help you along your career path, we also want to help the host arts organizations by providing them with interns who are ready to hit the ground running.  Let us know what skills/capabilities you have that would be helpful to an arts organization.
    • DON'T just tell us what you've done; DO tell us the results of what you've done.
    • DON'T just tell us what you think we want to hear; DO tell us what you think.
    • Your cover letter is the item on which you should focus the most attention and should help us get a sense of who you are and why you'd be a great fit for this program, not only for the arts organization at which you might be placed, but also as a member of the intern class. Your credentials (general information on your school work, and extracurricular activities) are what will get your foot in the door; your articulation in response to these questions is what will get you invited into the program.
    • Good luck!
