  • Direct Release Request - Kauai North Shore Animal Clinic

For Direct Release into Lihue Airport Only
  • If you are submitting this request less than 30 days before your pet's arrival:

    • There is no guarantee your permit will be issued in time.
    • The state will not provide status updates and does not make exceptions for late submissions, including for service animals.
    • You may be required to reschedule your travel or route your pet through Honolulu (HNL).
    • Our Direct Release booking fee is non-refundable, even if the permit is not issued.

    ⚠️ Please note:
You may have already submitted your documents to AQS—however, they will not begin processing your Neighbor Island Inspection Permit (NIIP) until our confirmation is also received.

We cannot provide that confirmation unless you submit this form and your payment at least 30 days before your pet’s arrival.

The AQS does not notify us when you submit documents to them, and they do not guarantee permits for requests received with less than 30 days’ notice—even for service animals.

  • We're always happy to help with Direct Release inspections, even on short notice—but the final approval comes from the Animal Quarantine Station, and they rarely issue Neighbor Island Inspection Permits (NIIPs) with less than 30 days' notice. We wish we had more control, but without a permit, we’re not allowed to release pets at LIH.

    • If your pet is traveling in the cabin the inspector will either meet you at the end of the jetbridge as you enter the terminal or as you enter the baggage claim area.
    • If your pet is traveling as checked baggage the inspector will meet you at the elevators in the baggage claim area.
    • If your pet is traveling as cargo the inspector will meet you at your airline's cargo facility. The cargo facilities are located a short walk from the passenger terminal. Please arrive promptly at the cargo facility upon arrival.

  • Please Read: Important Information About Veterinary Care on Kaua‘i:

    • There are no 24/7 veterinary hospitals on Kaua‘i, and emergency care across the island is extremely limited. Emergency services are not guaranteed—even for established clients.

    • Kaua‘i North Shore Animal Clinic is not a 24-hour facility, but we are open Thursday through Sunday, including Sundays when all other clinics are closed. We offer extended weekend availability to help bridge the gap in care and support the island’s veterinary needs.

    • If your pet experiences a true emergency, the nearest 24/7 emergency hospital is VERC (Veterinary Emergency + Referral Center) on Oʻahu.

    • If your pet experiences a daytime emergency on a day we are closed (Monday–Wednesday), werecommend first contacting another local clinic that is open. If no in-person care is available, you may use VetTriage, a 24/7 video telehealth service that can assess your pet’s condition and guide next steps. Please note that in-person emergency care is not guaranteed—even after a VetTriage consultation.

If you’re relocating to Kaua‘i with pets, we strongly encourage you to plan ahead and understand the limitations of veterinary care on a small island. Our team is here to support you within the resources available locally.
