(dba Arkansas Parrot Rescue) Adoption/Foster Application
  • To begin the process of adoption

    1. order the book Parronting from the links at https://www.facebook.com/share/p/19sRnZEwXQ/.

    2. fill out this form and follow the page for posts of birds who may fit your family.

    3. read at least the first two chapters and browse the rest so you understand what animals can best fit you and how to use the book as a resource.

Before filling out this form, understand Akademe Sanctuary (dba Arkansas Parrot Rescue) does not condone caging. If you cannot prioritize, enable, protect, and otherwise treat a bird as you would a small child and family member then perhaps this is not the time for you to consider this.

Lying on this application or through the process of fostering or adopting is grounds for immediate revocation/termination of agreement. We place animals where they fit. We don't judge you. We judge for their best interests.

Some species are very adaptive, some are not. The most adorable and cuddly who live the longest are also unable to adapt well to change. This is a lifelong commitment on par to marrying an autistic child. If you will bore in a few months or get distracted by another cute animal, then this is not for you.

Our number one criteria for selection is the right love. With the right love, anything can be made to work.

  • Form

  • This is a family commitment. Other members of your household can't be in any degree against this. A bird will try to insinuate itself into the entire family. It must be included and treated as family. It may not like everyone, and everyone need not like it, but they must agree to disagree and be family anyway.

  • Some species can be very loud and/or destructive. While these can be remedied to a degree with training and better opportunities for more agreeable behavior, it may rub neighbors and landlords badly. Ideally it is nice to have an outside play area if not an aviary, especially to help with any behavioral issues. What you say here is more about helping you be able to adapt to this new family member, if you can.

We don't need long and involved stories, but we do need detail. Adding a parrot to a home requires a lot of adaptation on your part and the part of the household. We will help in every way we can.

  • By signing this application you confirm having read and agree to the contract terms stated here: http://akademe.org/CURE/Adoption_Contract.pdf.

You cannot sell this bird or convey it to another party without consent of Akademe Sanctuary. If anything doesn't work, bring the bird and its effects back to us.

In a sense you are marrying into our family. We are now family. We don't fire and forget. Be friends on social media. Share our experiences showing how our kids are doing and integrating (or not). There is no guarantee it will work. We will try.

We will disagree on politics and probably everything else. It doesn't matter. What matters is the well-being of the bird. We will show up to be sure everything is going okay. You must regularly post pictures and videos so we can confirm the animal's well being. We will help however we can. None of our kids will ever do without if we can help it.

None of our kids will be used for breeding without permission and supervision of the sanctuary either. Reproduction is reserved for repopulating the wild. There are enough breeders and too many homeless babies.

Failure to comply may result in immediate termination of the agreement requiring immediate return of the animal or payment of any deferred fees, legal expenses, damages, or other related bills.

A fostered animal and its effects shall be returned to the sanctuary upon request.

Before you can adopt, a home visit or video conference with a thorough home tour showing your plans must be completed.
