Three Important Lessons to Constantly Remember for Church Overseers:

Reality Check: the leadership of the local church is THE most important factor in determining human history and destiny…we’d be hard-pressed to find something more important in eternity’s eyes. There isn’t a greater task or role. Do you love Jesus?
Inexorable Truth: Be assured, YOU are going to mess up and fail…everyone makes mistakes, sins, falls short at times, learns the hard way, and gets disappointed and frustrated with our church and the individuals in it. We’ll never get it completely right. The perfect church is an idol. It’s a lie. Do you love Jesus?
Kind Assurance: Nevertheless, Jesus will build his Church and accomplish his purposes. The church is foremost the work of Jesus (Mt. 16:13-20). It is his passion, His love. His priority. Do you love Jesus?
The Essence and Charge of the Task of the Overseer. Will you…?

Shepherd the Flock—essentially relational care for the broken and lost
Guard the Teaching—preserve and protect the fullness of the biblical deposit
Model the Mission—set the example for others in the Body of Christ
Characteristics of the Most Effective Christian Overseers:

They pray regularly and consistently for the people in the church. This extends to praying for gospel workers to be sent into the harvest.
They let their hearts be shaped by the compassion and grace of Jesus. Without this, it is inevitable in church ministry that we will all become cynical, angry, disappointed and dismissive.
They seek to make a difference. Anyone can criticize and suggest things for others to do. Effective overseers are part of the solution, not merely pointing out the problems.
They do not sit on a part-time committee, but on Holy Ground. They seek to make their time together about personal and corporate growth among friends, with a solemn commitment to bless the church.
Ultimately, they seek to be more and more Gospel-centered.

The Heart of the Overseer--A Daily Prayer for the Next Month: Father, first off, I pray for wisdom and humility only you can provide as we approach our tasks. I pray we would not grow weary in doing good. I pray for Fulton Church to honor its purpose to grow in Christ, become a multi-generational community of discipleship and service, and to reach out to our local community and honor our global responsibility to the ministry of the Gospel. I pray your blessing on each member of the council. Remind us to watch our doctrine closely and keep growing in Christ. I pray for our staff, our ministry team leaders and members, the congregation itself, those not yet in saving relationship to Christ, for the sick and infirmed as well those who care for them, and for this team’s unity. Amen.
