    Code of Conduct

Auckland University Canoe Club Incorporated (AUCC)

    1.You will uphold kaitiakitanga:

Kaitiakitanga best translates to meaning guardianship and protection

AUCC recognises its role and responsibilities as kaitiaki (guardians) of not just our physical environment, but also our traditions, knowledge, culture, and taonga (prized item or resource)

    • As a member of AUCC you can expect us to represent you in protecting our environment in many ways. Including but not limited to reducing our environmental impact as much as possible, submitting our opinions on relevant policies and resource consents, and anything else that contributes to the conservation of our environment and rivers.
    • We expect you to do your best to individually reduce your environmental impact and work towards sustainable practices
    • Knowledge and skills learnt and developed at AUCC should be passed along to the next generation of members
    • As an AUCC member we expect you to protect any taonga you come across

You are the kaitiaki of this Code - protect and respect this Code. Stand up if you see it being disrespected.

    2.You will act with Manaakitanga:

Manaakitanga is a value that very loosely translates to ‘hospitality’. It is the art of being kind, generous, and showing encouragement and support to everyone, regardless of who they are.

To live the value of manaakitanga in an AUCC context:

    • Bullying, harassment or discrimination of any kind will not be accepted. This includes sexual harassment of any kind.
    • You will not behave in a way that makes others feel unsafe or unwelcome.
    • Examples of things that will not be accepted, without limitation, include:
      • Using or possessing illicit drugs of any kind.
      • Constant excessive consumption of alcohol causing a nuisance, or causing harm to yourself or others.
      • Attempting to pressure others into doing something they do not want to do, such as consume alcohol.
      • Making inappropriate remarks to others.

Intoxication will not be tolerated as an excuse for poor behaviour.

    3.You will encourage whanaungatanga:

Whanaungatanga is used to describe relationship/kinship/sense of family connection which provides people with a sense of belonging.

AUCC is first and foremost a community where people with an interest in whitewater and adventure can feel like they belong, and are valued and supported.

Acknowledge that you will not always agree with everyone. Everyone deserves the right to freedom of expression, with the responsibility of respecting and acknowledging others with different points of view.

Foster supportive and encouraging relationships between club members and the wider whitewater community.

Behaviour that goes against this code will be addressed through appropriate interventions, regardless of severity.

If you believe that there has been behaviour that contravenes this Code, please report it using the AUCC complaints process.

    Covid-19 Vaccination Policy

    Purpose

To set out obligations and responsibilities for club membership and participation in Auckland University Canoe Club (AUCC) activities within the context of Covid-19, Covid-19 vaccinations and the New Zealand ‘My Vaccine Pass’ system as an official club of the University of Auckland (UoA)

    Application

This policy applies to the AUCC membership, including anyone participating in activities under the direct control of AUCC or accessing AUCC facilities.

    Health Orders and University Policy

    This policy does not apply where AUCC is subject to any Health Order/UoA requirements and either;

The Health Order/UoA requirements afford a higher standard of protection; or
The Health Order/UoA requirements prohibit the application of parts of this policy.

    Background

AUCC is committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for all its members in accordance with the aims and objectives under the official AUCC Constitution. AUCC recognises that vaccination is a safe and effective means of reducing infection and transmission, and of protecting our community from serious disease. AUCC supports the application of ‘My Vaccine Pass’ in order to protect our community to the greatest extent where reasonably practical.

AUCC recognises that the pandemic - including the nature of the virus and variants, the Government response, legislation and guidance, UoA policies and medical and health knowledge - is constantly changing.

    Vaccination Requirements

There are no specific vaccination requirements for general membership to AUCC.
All participants engaging in face-to-face activities organized by AUCC or accessing AUCC facilities must have a valid ‘My Vaccine Pass’ in order to participate.
All participants in face-to-face activities organized by AUCC must provide evidence of ‘My Vaccine Pass’ on request.
This will be verified by the NZ Pass Verifier app.

    Responsibilities

All members of AUCC are responsible for familiarising themselves with the content and complying with the requirements of this policy
The AUCC Executive Committee is responsible for managing procedures associated with this policy.
Storage of ‘My Vaccine Pass’ information will be limited to the official membership sign up form.
This will only be visible to the Officers and the RSO of the Executive committee.

AUCC recognises that there may be some members or participants who do not wish to be vaccinated. You continue to have that choice, however, those that do not satisfy the requirements of this policy will be unable to take part in face-to-face club activities.

For our seasoned kayakers, we are referring to Grade 2 rivers (i.e. Tarawera). If you are unsure, you may base this off of your previous water experience (i.e. flatwater, beach swimming, etc).

Auckland University Canoe Club (AUCC) is a not-for-profit charitable organisation and our activities are funded by way of a cost recovery model. The majority of our funding originates from membership, gear hire fees, and the generosity of grants. Funding is used for the club’s core trip activities, gear maintenance and acquisition, liability and contents insurance and club administration. AUCC will not generally accept membership refunds unless under exceptional circumstances that would be decided on a case by case basis. This is accepted as best practise and in-line with other charities and sports clubs. Membership fees go towards covering many fixed costs associated with the management and maintenance of our club operations of which we already run on exceptionally small budgets.
