2A USA Internship/Scholarship Application
Established by 2A USA, this scholarship is administered by the SUSCC Foundation to provide educational opportunities in Advanced Manufacturing to bolster economic and community vitality and to provide more skilled Automation Technician workers for the East Alabama area.
PROGRAM PURPOSE
- To allow the Company to assist the College in developing a program that is tailored to meeting the current and future workforce needs of the company and the community. Furthermore, to provide program related on the job work experience for individuals who are pursuing an Associate’s Degree and certificates in the Advanced Manufacturing programs of study.
- The Program provides a resource for potential employment of student-trainees (Interns) upon successful completion and graduation of the Advanced Manufacturing Technology program of study (Machining).
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
- To provide qualified college students with supervised, work-based learning experiences through on-the-job work experience related to their CTE field of study or major (Advanced Manufacturing with a concentration in Machining).
- To make available a variety of occupational experiences designed to assist Interns in determining the professional fields for which they may be suited.
- To provide learning and employment opportunities for qualified Interns regardless of race, color, sex, religion, disability, veteran status, age, or national origin.
- To establish and strengthen the relationship between the Company and the College in order to ensure mutual reinforcement between college curricula and the world of work.
WORK SCHEDULE
- Each work experience shall be planned consistent and aligned as closely as possible with the Intern’s related instruction and career goals.
- While enrolled, Interns are expected on average to work a minimum of 20 hours a week and a MAXIMUM of 28 hours a week and simultaneously enroll in the prescribed coursework as outlined in the Program curriculum success guide, Minimum credit hours would depend on term; range 12 to 17 credit hours. Exceptions to the work schedules of 20 minimum and 28 maximum hours will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Exceptions may include the College’s semester breaks. Either the Company or the Intern will make request to the College’s Internship Coordinator or College Contact for exceptions. Intern work schedules will follow Company guidelines and SHOULD NOT interfere with the Intern’s academic/related instruction schedule. Work schedules will be as scheduled with no overtime.
SELECTION
- The Scholarship committee will include representatives from the Colleges’ Technical Division and 2A USA. The Committee will identify and recommend eligible applicants for consideration. Reference Appendix B for the selection, hiring and on-board process.
- Students/Applicants selected for entrance into the program may be required to undergo Company’s standard pre-employment selection procedures, including a pre-employment health assessment, drug screen, criminal background check, etc. Interns must be authorized to work in the United States and will be required to complete the I-9 verification process before beginning work at Company (or as set by Company).
PAY AND BENEFITS
- Interns shall be paid in accordance with the Company’s established pay schedule.
- Interns will be paid starting at a progressive wage per hour with no overtime.
- Interns are considered part-time employees and not eligible for any Company benefits (e.g., vacation, health insurance, holidays, 401k, etc.).
PERFORMANCE APPRAISALS
- At mid-term and at the end of each semester, the supervisor for the Intern will complete a Supervisor’s Evaluation/Grade Sheet (Appendix C). The supervisor, instructor (or designee), and the Intern will review the evaluation and discuss behaviors to continue and areas of improvement.
- If the Intern’s academic/related instruction or job performance falls below standards, he/she may be given an opportunity to improve or will be separated from the Program.
TERMINATIONS
While working at the Company, Interns are at will employees. Appointments to the program and employment may be terminated at any time for any reason by the Intern or the Company, including, but not limited to, the following reasons:
- Resignation
- Change to a curriculum or program of study that will not qualify the Intern for the position. Failure to follow the coursework in the prescribed curriculum guide without written approval from the college and the company.
- Suspension, expulsion, or withdrawal from the College
- Unsatisfactory work performance and /or conduct
- Failure to maintain academic standards
- Failure to comply with Company policies and procedures
- Inability of the Company to continue in the Program
2A USA Scholarship & Internship Agreement
The Company will:
- Designate a Company point of contact to maintain coordination with the College.
- Serve as industry advisors concerning related instruction curriculum and programmatic issues concerning the Program and stackable credentials earned through the program.
- Industry Partners agree to work collectively and collaboratively. The Program shall run parallel to other internship/Internship programs and not compete for students or status.
- Provide job descriptions in advance of the co-op student assignment (Appendix D).
- Establish work schedules consistent with the co-op student’s class schedule to enable intern/co-op to complete the program.
- Orient the Intern to the Company’s policies and procedures (Appendix E).
- Select the Intern referred by College in compliance with EEO principles.
- Process all personnel actions and keep necessary records in relation to the Interns employment.
- Provide meaningful work assignments related and aligned to the Interns related instruction and career goals where he/she can learn and be productive.
- Provide progressive and diversified work-based learning experiences which will expose the Intern to a comprehensive task list to prepare the Intern for an occupation related to their program of study.
- Designate a mentor/supervisor for the Intern during the work period at a rate of not more than one student to one mentor.
- Support completion of projects assigned by College as part of the co-op student experience.
- Conduct appraisals and review evaluations with the mentor/supervisor, the co-op student, and the College instructor (or designee).
- Counsel Interns regarding their performance by discussing behaviors to continue and areas that need improvement.
- Notify the College in writing of any change in the Intern’s employment status.
- Commit to permitting the Intern to complete his/her degree/certificate before offering to hire him/her into a regular position.
- Support career awareness and recruitment efforts for the industry and the Program.
The College will:
- Designate a representative to work with the Company to serve as a liaison between the College and the Intern.
- Inform eligible students of the Program opportunities.
- Refer interested and qualified candidates to the Program without discrimination.
- Correlate work and study in a manner that will expand the Intern’s educational development.
- Furnish the company with requested information related to the Intern’s field of study and academic standing.
- Monitor academic progress.
- Inform (in writing) the Company of any change in the Interns’ progress and performance.
The Student will:
- Adhere to company work schedule, policies, and procedure.
- Assume personal and professional responsibilities for actions and activities.
- Use a courteous, enthusiastic and professional approach to policies and procedures within the Company.
- Meet academic, performance, and conduct standards set forth by 2A USA and Southern Union State Community College.
- Enroll in the appropriate related instruction courses.
- Provide the Company and Southern Union State Community College with periodic progress reports on the quality of work and study assignments.
- Submit transcripts at the end of each semester to supervisor.
- Work effectively with peers and supervisors.
- Meet citizenship and security requirements.
- 2A USA Scholarships are awarded to students currently enrolled or who will be enrolling in the Advanced Manufacturing Program at Southern Union State Community College.
- Recipients of a 2A USA Scholarship agree to pursue their Degree and Stackable Certificates in Advanced Manufacturing Machining Technology.
- All scholarship recipients must have a high school diploma or GED and meet all other admission requirements for the College.
- This scholarship covers tuition and fees including facility, technology, technical, bond reserve, special building fee and ACCS enhancement fees until funds are exhausted toward the progression of an AAS in Advanced Manufacturing with a concentration in Machining. The scholarship is non-renewable.
- Scholarships will be terminated for students who break residency for more than one semester. Students who are suspended from the College may not be able to renew their scholarship when they are permitted to return.
- When a student is required to miss a term due to scheduling difficulties, he/she is required to notify the Technical Advisor and Financial Aid Office in writing prior to the beginning of the term.
- Scholarship recipients who receive the Scholarship must maintain a cumulative 2.75 GPA. Satisfactory academic progress toward your technical degree is required for scholarship renewal.
- Scholarships are awarded for the Advanced Manufacturing Technology program with a concentration in Machining and are not transferable to other programs.
- 2A USA scholarships will not pay for a repeat of successfully completed or failed courses.
- Satisfactory academic progress and completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be required.
- Recipients must meet with the Director of Technical Education or the Technical Advisor Ms. Amanda Harkins prior to Registration.

Internship Position

Essential Duties:
- Assist Journeymen in day to day assigned work. Intern will be assigned work with Journeymen in a job shadowing type role.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in a safe manner.
Qualifications:
- Attending Southern Union State Community College and declared major in Advanced Manufacturing concentration in Machining.
- Maintain an overall 3.0 GPA (minimum) in Machining program classes.
- Maintain an overall 2.75 GPA in all courses.
- Have completed at least one required Math Classes with a grade of “C” or higher.
- Have completed at least one semester in an Advanced Manufacturing Program.
- Have attendance record of 95% or higher.
- Continue in the Program and maintain a full schedule of classes.
- Be a minimum of 18 years old.
- Be eligible for employments in the United States.
- Adhere to company-specific personnel policies including those regarding time and attendance.
Internship placement with 2A USA is contingent upon the successful completion of interview process, pre-employment physical, drug screen and background check. Candidates must have the legal right to work in the United States and communicate in English.
Hold Harmless Agreement
SIGNATURES
The Intern releases and holds 2A USA and Southern Union harmless from any and all liability of claims for damages that may arise directly or indirectly to the extent caused by the acts or omissions of the co-op in the Program.
