Please keep the below information in mind when reviewing the Handbook. We aim to hit the mark with our tone, consistency, and style.
Our style in brief:
Tone is friendly, relatively casual, and still well-informed. There should be a bit of humor, and above all, this book should be accessible to a broad audience as well as an expert eye.
Consistency is what matters. As a general rule, we use Merriam-Webster, but there are many subjective grammatical rules. What matters most is using the same spellings or hyphenations throughout, e.g., we always use "co-founder," so an instance of "cofounder" would be flagged as incorrect.
We use:
- American English
- Chicago style citations and footnotes
- The Oxford Comma
- “they” as a singular, rather than he/she, (s)he, etc.
- Animals are he, she, they, and never “it”
- No spaces before/after slash
- “We” rather than “I”
