Corporate Fiber & Materials Benchmark Program: Community Consultation
  • About Textile Exchange

Textile Exchange is a global non-profit driving positive impact on climate change across the fashion and textile industry. We guide a growing community of brands, manufacturers, and farmers towards more purposeful production from the very start of the supply chain.

Our goal is to help the industry to achieve a 45% reduction in the emissions that come from producing fibers and raw materials by 2030. To get there, we’re keeping our focus holistic and interconnected, accelerating the adoption of practices that improve the state of our water, soil health, and biodiversity too.

Our corporate benchmarking program for fashion and textile companies aims to drive a race to the top in the transition to preferred materials. Since its pilot in 2015, the program has grown to accommodate over 300 companies, and this number increases every year. You can find out more about our corporate benchmarking program and our annual Material Change Index, Impacts Dashboard, and Insights.

    Stakeholder consultation

Every three years we do a deep dive into the program to ensure it is futurefit for driving change. An important part of our improvement cycle is to hear from our participants and other stakeholders. This year, we are reaching out to a wider community of initiatives and knowledge-holders to explore opportunities for our benchmark that add even more value and greater impact.

    Consultation objectives

We are calling on you and others in our wider community that have knowledge and experience across a range of our benchmark-related areas, from materials and industry sustainability to climate and biodiversity, ESG and impact investing. We want to be sure our benchmark program aligns, complements, and avoids unhelpful duplication with other important initiatives within our community.

    Consultation process

Thanks to your feedback via the online form, we can collect a lot of data systematically. We’ll keep your responses confidential, and we’ll share the results back to the benchmarking community in an aggregated and anonymized format.

Please submit your response by Friday 25th February 2022. As always, make sure to get in touch if you have any questions or would like any further information about the process.

Thank you! We highly appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with us.

    Best wishes

    The Corporate Benchmarking Team

  • About You

Your details are kept confidential, however, they are helpful for us when analyzing the data or contacting you to understand your responses better.
  • Consultation Themes

While considering your responses, please keep in mind that we are seeking input on how these themes relate to our corporate benchmarking activities and how we can improve our products and services. We hope to do this through aligning with and complementing other corporate benchmarks and reporting initiatives, avoiding survey burden and duplication, and using best-practice methodologies to ensure our program is robust, credible, and offers valuable data and insights to participants and their stakeholders.

    Themes:

    1. Raw materials
    2. Global goals
    3. Climate action
    4. Biodiversity
    5. Circularity
    6. Benchmarking / Reporting
    7. ESG / Investor-grade data
    8. Other areas

Please go to the themes/questions that you feel are most applicable for your input, and where you would like to provide feedback. There are 2-3 questions per the theme.

  • Theme 1: Raw Materials

The key role of the corporate fiber and materials benchmark (CFMB) program is to support and track company progress in the uptake of preferred materials and translate this to impact.

  • Q1. When it comes to raw materials, please rate the importance of the following industry actions over the next 5-10 years.

    1 = no importance; 2 = low importance; 3 = moderate importance; 4 = high importance; 5 = very high importance

  • Q2. From your perspective, please rate the importance of the following raw materials-related areas to benchmark progress.

    1 = no importance; 2 = low importance; 3 = moderate importance; 4 = high importance; 5 = very high importance

  • Theme 2: Global Goals

Alignment with global goals feels important for global harmonization and a “north star”. Currently, the CFMB program draws on the UN Global Compact reporting framework to integrate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its survey.

  • Theme 3: Climate Action

Textile Exchange’s goal is to help the global textile industry achieve a 45% reduction in the emissions that come from producing fibers and raw materials by 2023, over a baseline of emissions calculated in 2019.

  • Theme 4: Biodiversity

Textile Exchange recently developed a biodiversity benchmark (beta version) to support companies’ mobilization around biodiversity and preparation for meeting science-based targets. The next step is to further integrate biodiversity into the benchmarking cycle.

  • Theme 5: Circularity

Textile Exchange follows the Ellen MacArthur Foundation “Make Fashion Circular” guidelines and resource hierarchy to maintain a consistent message and encourage progress tracking against a common set of parameters. Benchmarking criteria and guidelines have been developed in collaboration with EMF.

  • Theme 6: Benchmarking/ Reporting

During the program review, Textile Exchange is committed to collaborating with other important benchmarking and reporting initiative-owners. We have already identified opportunities - and are working with the Sustainable Apparel Coalition - to find an effective fit with the Higg Brand and Retail Module (Higg BRM).

  • Theme 7: ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and Investor Grade Data

The ESG (environment, social and governance) agenda is becoming more mainstream within the investment community. Disclosure and reporting on supply chain and sourcing practices will become more important for companies.

  • Theme 8: Other Areas

There are many areas and themes we could explore. We would appreciate any further feedback or ideas that you would like to share with us.
