How do perceptions of taste affect women’s lives?
My name is Sophie Neville, and I’m a textile artist currently working on a project called Tawdry as part of a residency with Metal Culture Peterborough. The project aims to explore how ideas of taste, perceptions and expectations have an effect on the way women are treated. I will be looking at this through the lens of the story of Saint Audrey, an Anglo Saxon saint whose name gives us the word ‘tawdry’. I am planning to hold focus groups where participants will discuss these topics. Their words will then inspire designs for crochet lace artworks in the form of wearable neckpieces.
As well as the focus groups, I want to open the opportunity to contribute to everyone who is interested. If any of the above topics interest you, I would be very grateful if you would fill in the following questionnaire. Anyone is welcome to contribute, however I am particularly interested in opinions from people who identify as female or femme/feminine-presenting.
Please note when using the word ‘taste’, I am referring to the ability to discern what is accepted/fashionable/high standard etc. – not the taste of food!
