ALC Marriage PolicyIn Scripture, the marriage union is held to be the human echo of the relationship between Christ and the church, a covenant relationship characterized by joy, intimacy, and permanence. The Bible also defines marriage as a covenant relationship between one man and one woman. This high regard for marriage guides Abundant Life Church in regards to weddings either performed by a representative of ALC or weddings held on our campuses.
We ask our staff to use their discretion in performing wedding ceremonies within the following guidelines:
1. We value the spiritual lives of the couples we marry.“Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her…” Ephesians 5:22,25
2. We value the preparation for marriage.“Are you pledged to a woman? Do not seek to be released. Are you free from such a commitment? Do not look for a wife. But if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this.” 1 Corinthians 7:27-28
3. We value the purity and the holiness of the marriage bed.“Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed be kept pure...” Hebrews 13:4
4. We value the permanence of marriage.“But at the beginning of creation God ‘made male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let no man separate.” Mark 10:6-9
“The male-female marriage covenant will literally bring forth new human life, thus creating more human beings who will image God in a variety of other types of agape-love relationships. In this sense, the male-female marriage covenant relationship has the capacity to uniquely image the life-producing Triune God.” Paul Eddy
