Safe Operating Procedure for Unloading Containers

Protect your eyes when cutting off the security seal/bolt. Dispose of cut seals/bolts to remove risk of slipping on loose items. Use Eye and Hand protection if required.

Ensure container cuffs are affixed before attempting to open container doors.

If container doors are difficult to open a steel pipe can be used to provide greater leverage. Always open the door on the right with caution to assess stability of the load before removing container cuff. If load is unstable, close the door (if possible) and notify your leading hand or supervisor immediately who will ensure the collapsed container procedure is followed (toggle bars, reports, photos etc).

Remove safety netting, straps and/or dunnage (air) bags only when safe to do so under the supervision of leading hands and/or supervisors. Ensure cutting device is compliant to Belway or customer requirements. (eg retractable, parrot knife, telescopic cutters)

Assess carton weights and sizes before attempting to lift and watch out for loose or falling items at all times.

Safe Operating Procedure for Unloading Containers (Cont.)

Maintain a 3 metre exclusion zone around a forklift where possible. Some sites require you to exit the container before the forklift enters (especially where containers are on trailers / docks). If you are required to remain inside the container when a forklift is in operation (only when container is on the ground), you must stand at the side of the pallets where you are visible to the forklift driver. Some sites have allocated “pedestrian safety zones” between dock spaces in which its safe to stand it while the forklift is entering and exiting the container for full visibility. If available, stand there.

Never stand behind the pallet when a forklift is entering the container. The forklift driver must sound the horn before entering the container.

Your Supervisor or Team Leader will inform you of the correct procedure depending on the customer you work with. If you are required to stay inside the container during the unload process, stand to the sides of the pallets, 3 metres away from forklift. NEVER BEHIND or FRONT.

If customer requires you to stay outside the container during the unload process, exit the container before the forklift goes up the dock ramp, stand to either side of the container dock away from the door to be as visible as possible to all forklift operators. IF a safety zone area is marked on the floor, Stand in that area and remove all obstructions from those zones.

Safety tips to prevent injuries when lifting

DO NOT twist/turn as you lift. Lift to an upright position first, then move your feet to re position your body.

DO NOT stand on unstable or uneven surfaces such as pallets or cartons. Always plant your feet firmly on stable surfaces. If required, use a safety step to reach high objects and pass the cartons down to your partner in the container rather than climbing up and down and risk slipping or falling from the step.

Brace your body weight by placing one foot forward and/or one hand on a stable surface to support your back but do not over extend.

Stretch constantly during work. Change sides in the container periodically (e.g after each time the pallets are replenished or at the quarter/half way mark) to equalise the stresses on each side of your body.

Do not lift more than you can, do so safely and comfortably.

Stretch and warm down after work to help your body recover quickly.

Common injuries and potential hazards to avoid

    CRUSHED or PINCHED FINGERS
Be careful when placing heavy items such as canned items. Watch for sharp
edges on tops of cans as these can split or separate finger nails from the ends of fingers.

    BACK PAIN
Using the correct lifting techniques such as lifting with your legs rather than your back can avoid back pain and injury.

    TWISTED ANKLES
Watch out for loose items such as container seals, uneven surfaces such as the edges of ramps and uneven ground surfaces that can cause you to trip, slip or roll your ankles.

    WALKING INTO HAZARDS
Watch where you are going. Do not talk on your phone or text while walking. Stand in a safe location, back to a wall for example with a clear area in full view in front of you before using your phone.

    BEWARE OF FORKLIFTS
Watch out for forklifts in operation. Keep a minimum safe distance of 3 metres around an operating forklift. Be aware of the paths taken by forklifts and avoid standing behind a forklift at all times.
