    The assessment tasks for SITXWHS001 Participate in safe work practices are outlined in the assessment plan below. These tasks have been designed to help you demonstrate the skills and knowledge that you have learnt during your course.

    Assessment for this unit

    SITXWHS001 Participate in safe work practices describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to incorporate safe work practices into own workplace activities. It requires the ability to follow predetermined health, safety and security procedures and to participate in organisational work health and safety (WHS) management practices. For you to be assessed as competent, you must successfully complete two assessment tasks:

    Assessment plan (Tasks)

    1. Observations: This assessment task requires you to work safely in the kitchen on three separate occasions. It is to be co-assessed with any other practical cooking assessment.

    2. Project: Complete a discussion report. Participate in a Work Health and Safety Meeting Respond to an emergency and complete an incident report

  • Assessment Task 1: Observations

    Task summary

    This assessment task requires you to work safely in the kitchen on three separate occasions. It is to be co-assessed with any other practical cooking assessment.

    This assessment is to be completed in the simulated work environment in the RTO.

    Assessment Task 1 Instructions
    Provide answers to all of the questions below:

    1. Carefully read the following:
      • This assessment task is a practical one where you will demonstrate your ability to work safely in the kitchen on three separate occasions. Your assessor will provide you with the specific details of your tasks to complete while in the kitchen. This unit will be co-assessed while completing other practical assessment tasks. Your assessor will provide you with the details directly of which unit/units will be coassessed with this unit.
    2. Prepare to work safely.
      • Prepare to complete your activity provided to you by your assessor:
        • Make sure you are familiar with your RTO or training environment’s WHS policies and procedures, hazard reporting requirements and safe work practices that you have learned and trained with during the training part of this unit.
        • Think about the Personal Protective Equipment and clothing/uniform you will require and when you may need to use or wear it.
        • Think about the reporting requirements that are in place at your RTO or kitchen environment and what to do in case of a breach.
        • Review the observation checklist for this assessment task so you know the criteria you are going to be assessed against.
    3. Work safely.
      • Undertake the activities provided to you by your assessor on three separate occasions.
      • Your assessor will complete the observation checklist on each of the three occasions.
      • At least once during the three observations, you are required to complete a hazard identification form You can use the hazard identification report as part of the food safety program and policies and procedures of the RTO or commercial kitchen, or you can use the template provided below.

    Task summary
    This assessment task requires you to complete the following activities:
    • Participate in a WHS meeting
    • Participate in an emergency response drill
    • Participate in a debrief and complete an incident report.
    This assessment is to be completed in the simulated work environment in the RTO.

    This assessment task is to be completed in your RTO classroom or kitchen as advised by your assessor.

    Refer to the Discussion Template below and complete it prior to participating in the next step.

  • 2. Participate in a WHS meeting


    You are required to participate in a group WHS meeting to discuss emergency procedures and responses. Your assessor, in the role of your supervisor, will run the WHS meeting to outline general WHS considerations, discuss and demonstrate potential emergency situations that may occur and to remind everyone of the procedures to follow.


    During the meeting, you are required to show full participation including:

    • A discussion of general WHS considerations using the Discussion Template provided.
    • Talking about the situations that might occur and asking any questions that you think may be relevant to the situation from your perspective.
    • A demonstration that you know where the procedures are located and how to follow them in the event of an emergency.

    3. Emergency response simulation

    After you have participated in the WHS meeting, you are required to enact an emergency response to a potential emergency as and when advised by your assessor. You are required to demonstrate that you can:

    • Recognise and respond appropriately to the situation.
    • Follow the security and emergency procedures relevant.
    • Seek assistance from the correct person/people.

    4. Team debrief and incident report

    You will now debrief after the simulation to discuss the event and your response
    and will then complete an individual incident report as though the simulation were
    real.


    Participate in the group discussion about the following:

    • What went right and what could have been done better/quicker or different
      next time?
    • How did you feel during the simulation and how has this prepared you in case
      of a real event?
    • What are your key takeaways from your participation in the simulation?

    Use the incident report template below to complete the details of the incident and submit to your assessor.

    After the assessment, the Assessment Summary Sheet should be signed the Assessor, Student and the Academic Manager. If a Not Competent, has been achieved then strategies to address the gaps in the performance should be have been identified and a time for reassessment organised on the attached resubmission / feedback sheet.
