The Racism is a Public Health Crisis Implementation Tool lists the organizational practices identified in the Racism is a Public Health Crisis Declaration. Organizations must identify an Executive Sponsor, a responsible staff person and an experienced, internal cross-functional team to complete this tool and to implement the selected practices.

There are three stages of implementation listed for each practice:

1) Currently Implementing

2) Planning to Implement

3) Not Planning to Implement

Steps to complete Assessment:

Select your organization’s stage of implementation for each practice.
After you have selected your organization’s stage of implementation add the timeframe to each “planning to implement” practice selected.
After you have identified the timeframe for implementation write down a few concrete steps identifying how your organization will implement the practices selected. Consider your objectives, challenges, staffing and the resources needed to support achievement.
This tool must be reviewed and updated every 30 to 90 days.

1. Publicly assert that racism is a public health crisis affecting our entire society.
2. Conduct an assessment of internal policy, practices, procedures, reporting relationships, and organizational structures to ensure racial equity is a core element of our work.
3. Work to create an equity and justice- oriented organization, with staff, and/or other stakeholders identifying specific activities to increase diversity and to incorporate anti-racist principles within leadership, staffing, and contracting.
4. Incorporate educational and professional development efforts to address and dismantle racism, expand understanding of racism, and how racism affects individual and population health.
5. Provide tools to engage actively and authentically with Black and Brown communities.
6. Advocate for relevant policies that improve health in Black and Brown communities, and support local, state, and federal initiatives that advance social and economic justice, while also encouraging individual advocacy to dismantle structural and systematic racism.
7. Work to build alliances and partnerships with other appropriate organizations that are confronting racism and encourage partners and/or stakeholders to recognize racism as a public health crisis.
8. Allocate adequate financial and human resources to accomplish all selected activities.
