Quiz: Why Would You Ask That?
Any question that involves your personal life is an illegal/inappropriate question. The California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) prohibits employment practices that discriminate against applicants or employees on the basis of the following illegal topics: - Race, Color, or National Origin - Religion - Sex, Gender Identity, or Sexual Orientation - Pregnancy status - Disability - Age or Genetic Information - Citizenship - Marital Status or Number of Children What do you do if you get asked an illegal question? When you face illegal or inappropriate interview questions, be diplomatic in your response. You won't get hired if you misread the interviewer’s intentions and overreact. On the other hand, they may want to see how you handle delicate situations, so here’s the perfect chance for you to demonstrate your professionalism and tact. Give brief responses as a way to set limits on any topic that seems inappropriate and navigate all answers toward your specific qualifications for the job. If the interviewer presses you for more, politely mention you are happy to answer their question, but are not sure how it relates to the job (this gives them a chance to explain or rethink their line of questioning). Instructions: Please answer the following questions below by determining whether the question being asked is illegal or not illegal.
