  • History of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.

    Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated was founded on the predominantly white campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 12, 1922. The sorority was organized by seven school teachers who shared a vision of true sisterhood. Sigma Gamma Rho became an incorporated national collegiate sorority on December 30, 1929 and has the distinction of being the first African-American Greek organization on Butler’s campus. Today, we have grown to over 77,000 members with over 500 chapters in the United States, Bahamas, Bermuda, the Virgin Islands and Germany. As a leading national service organization, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. has met the challenges of the day and continues to grow through Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service.     Lambda Rho Sigma Chapter History

    On June 2, 2012, Lambda Rho Sigma Alumnae Chapter was chartered in Santa Monica, CA by six women. In an effort to uphold the core values of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, it is imperative to expand and enhance the organization’s National and Regional programs. With the slogan “Greater Service, Greater Progress” as our driving force, the City of Santa Monica will benefit in every facet of education, healthy living, and community outreach to children and adults. We are honored to grow through Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service as we continue to address the concerns that impact our society on all educational, civic, and economic levels.     Scholarship Application Requirements 

    • High School Senior
    • Minimum 3.0 GPA
    • Demonstrated leadership skills
    • Essay (prompts provided)
    • Unofficial transcript
    • Two letters of recommendation preferably from a high school teacher, counselor, or pastor who can attest to the applicant’s academic and/or leadership abilities.
    • Official letter of acceptance from a four-year college/university or community college that is accredited by one of the six regional accrediting associations in the United States.

    IMPORTANT: If your application  does not coincide with ALL requirements, it will not be considered. Scholarship winners give permisson to use their name and photo in announcements on social media platforms.

    Please write a 2-page essay on ONE of the topics provided. The essay should follow the format below:

    • Title page with title, applicant name, school, and date
    • Two (2) pages typed, MLA format
    • Black ink only
    • Times New Roman, 12 point font
    • Header: Name and page number on each page
    • Correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation
    • Concise and on topic—stick to the prompt you choose
    • Must be your original work and not plagiarized. Plagiarized essays will be cause the application to be disqualified.
