• JFNA National Young Leadership Cabinet Guidelines and Application

  • The Jewish Federations of North America’s (“JFNA”) National Young Leadership (“NYL”) team is excited to officially open the application and nomination process for the NYL Cabinet Class of 2022!

    We invite your community to nominate candidates and will accept applications until 5:00 PM ET on Tuesday, June 21st, 2022.

    Since its founding in 1963, NYL Cabinet (“Cabinet”) has consistently produced top leaders in the Federation movement and throughout the Jewish World. A Jewish values-based leadership and philanthropic development program, Cabinet engages highly dedicated individuals who embody the values of humility, authenticity, and integrity. Ideal candidates take seriously their own call and responsibility to lead within the greater Jewish community as well as being an active member of the Cabinet Community. Members have the opportunity to hone their leadership skills, establish a peer group, share best practices, troubleshoot community challenges, and bring their ideas and strategies home for deepening commitment to Jewish Life and Federation.

    Through Cabinet programming, including International Study Missions, members take part in hands-on experiences to learn about the work of Federation and its partner agencies and to strengthen their connections to global Jewry. With over 420 current members from more than 60 Federations across North America, Cabinet trains, networks, and inspires the most promising young volunteers for positions of leadership in the Jewish community by developing leader to have the skills necessary to strengthen and support Jewish life locally, across North America, and globally.

    The Cabinet curriculum focuses on leadership development and Jewish enrichment opportunities, with a menu of dynamic travel and online experiences, and provides leaders in their 30s and 40s a transformative and philanthropic network of nearly 4,200 alumni engaged around the most pressing global issues in the Jewish community today.

    CRITERIA FOR MEMBERSHIP (APPLICANTS):

    Age: Candidates must be between 30 – 40 years of age in the calendar year (2022) that they begin their Cabinet experience. Age exceptions are rare but may be granted on a case-by-case basis.

    Retreat: Attendance at Cabinet’s annual retreat (“Retreat”), held in North America, is strongly recommended of all first-year members. It is encouraged in each subsequent year. Retreat is the heart of the Cabinet experience, and most members attend each year. The 2022 Cabinet Retreat is scheduled for August 9th -14th in Palm Beach, Florida. We will be monitoring the COVID-19 situation and will share any relevant safety protocols in preparation for this event. 

    First years are required to participate in orientation, which will be held virtually in July.

    Campaign/Giving: Candidates must make a minimum gift of $5,000 to their local Federation’s unrestricted Annual Campaign for 2023 (in line with the local campaign cycle, as determined by the local Federation).

    Leadership: Candidates should have demonstrated leadership or have the potential to take on leadership positions in their local communities. Strong candidates are those who are, or who have the potential to be, leaders in the Jewish Federation movement or other Jewish communal organizations.

    Nominations: Candidates must be nominated to join Cabinet by their local Federation.

    Interview: Each candidate must be interviewed by a current member of Cabinet from a community other than the candidate’s local community.

    EXPECTATIONS OF MEMBERS:

    Local Participation: All members of Cabinet are expected to actively participate in their local Federations, including programming and their Federation’s campaign.

    JFNA/Cabinet Events: In addition to attending Retreat, members of Cabinet have the opportunity and are encouraged to attend the Cabinet Study Mission (international travel), the Domestic Mission, the Washington Conference, the General Assembly (held in North America, but periodically held in Israel), the International Lion of Judah Conference (women only), and other Young Leadership conferences/events. Please note that official Cabinet activities do not extend to non-Member spouses, partners, significant others, or children unless otherwise noted in registration materials. Members are responsible for the fees and expenses, including travel, related to these event.

    Conduct: Members of Cabinet are representatives of their communities, JFNA, and the Jewish people. Members are expected to treat others with respect and hold themselves to the highest standard of Jewish ethics, in accordance with Cabinet’s Statement of Values.

    Endowment: Members are asked to partake in a meaningful conversation about endowing their gift by the end of their tenure on Cabinet.

    Term Limits: All members in good standing will serve for five years. 

    FINANCIAL COMMITMENTS OF MEMBERS

    Renewal Fee: Each member must pay an annual renewal fee of $150.  This fee covers the costs of any books/materials that a Cabinet member receives as well as exclusive access to ongoing conference calls, webinars, and other leadership development opportunities offered to members of Cabinet.

    Cabinet Retreat, Study Mission, and other Conferences/Event: Members are responsible for the fees and expenses related to attending events. In addition to Cabinet-specific events, members are encouraged to attend JFNA conferences and events, including the Washington Conference (public policy), JFNA’s annual General Assembly (GA), a Cabinet domestic mission, as well as the International Lion of Judah conference (women only).

    Minimum Donation: Members must make a minimum donation of $5,000 to their location Federation’s Annual Campaign in their first year of membership, with the aim to increase year-over-year for each year they are on Cabinet. Additionally, Cabinet members are encouraged to participate in second-line campaigns and emergency campaigns.

    Arrears: If members are not up-to-date with payments, as determined by their local community, their local professional will inform a senior Cabinet professional. Once the senior Cabinet professional has the necessary information, they will advise the Cabinet Co-Chairs, who will discuss the matter directly with the member. Such members must make agreements with their local Federations to make payment in full within a reasonable period of time. If full payment is not made within that period, such members forfeit their membership on Cabinet. All such conversations will be held in strictest confidence.

    Nomination and Application Instructions:

    The nomination and application process for NYL Cabinet membership will open on Monday, February 28th, 2022.

    Nomination and Application: Each candidate is required to complete this online application form. In addition, the local Professional for each candidate is required to complete and submit this nomination form.

    *All forms must be submitted by 5:00 PM PST on Tuesday, June 21, 2022.

    Candidate Review:  Cabinet leadership, along with JFNA professional staff, will review the application and nomination forms once they are both received.

    Informational Conversation: Applicants will be connected with a current member of Cabinet to answer outstanding questions.

    Notification: After the informational conversation, the candidate may be extended an invitation to join Cabinet; the community will simultaneously be notified of the candidate’s status.
