• Efficiency for Access Design Challenge 2021/22

Final submission form (Note: One submission per team)

Thank you for your hard work so far as part of the Efficiency for Access Design Challenge. This is the third year of this international initiative and we are really excited about learning how your projects have developed. This challenge not only creates innovative designs, but fulfils a larger purpose by creating a community of students, academics and industry leaders in the hopes to accelerate progress towards UN Sustainable Development Goal 7.

Please ensure you complete this submission by 18:00 GMT on 15 April 2022. Prior to completing the form, ensure you have the executive summary of your project to hand and that you have read the requirements below in full.

This year 40 student teams from Bangladesh, Benin, Cameroon, India, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, Sweden, Uganda, the UK, the USA and Zimbabwe have been supported by over 40 industry experts in the energy access sector through webinars, mentoring and feedback on concept notes. The Efficiency for Access Design Challenge aims to foster innovation in the area of off-grid appliances, as well as to forge mutually beneficial long-lasting partnerships between universities, researchers and industry.

For information on the submission process please see the 'Final Submission' section of the CrowdSolve landing page. If you have any queries about the submission, contact eforachallenge@est.org.uk

  • Submission details

Each team is required to complete one submission showing us how you have met the assessment framework (available on page 30 of the Challenge Brief). Your submission should include a report and a 3-minute video.

    • The report should be no more than 4,000 words long and must be submitted with a table of contents, executive summary and all references. If you have submitted an application for prototyping funding, please ensure this is mentioned within your report and your needs statement and budget are attached as an appendix. Please note that the table of contents, references and appendices are not included within the word count. Report should be saved as a PDF and the following file naming convention used: YourUniversity_Team2021-##_TitleofTeamDesignProject_ReportSubmission
    • The video (MPEG/Mp4) should be no longer than 3 minutes (max 120MB) with no background noise and filmed in landscape (rather than portrait). Where possible, please do try to include all team members in this video. Please refer to the 'Video and Image guidance' for more information.
    • You have the option to attach additional materials that complement your submission (other videos, posters in PDF or photographs of your prototyping in png/jpeg format). Reviewers will be instructed to base their assessment on the merit of the key deliverables alone. Any additional material should only be used to complement the key deliverable should it eventually be deemed useful to further communicate your idea.

    Please ensure your submission contains:

    • The process your team went through to identify your design criteria.
    • The alternative options considered during the design process.
    • The recommended design, addressing each area of the assessment framework.
    • Justification for the recommended design based on your design criteria, in particular, how the selected design is appropriate to the social, environmental, economic, and cultural context of the chosen target community.
    • Outline the details of any external support provided to the design team and identify any content that is not attributable to the design team.
    • Contain a reflection on students’ learning / experience gained.
    • The explanation can include drawings or other graphics produced in the design process.

Your submission will be assessed by a team of international reviewers using the assessment framework found at the end of the Challenge Brief. The reviewer position is a voluntary role held by expert professionals within the off-grid sector and engineering.

Reviewers will produce feedback on the submissions. Feedback is returned to each team who submit.

Once the submissions are reviewed, all teams will be invited to pitch their designs to a panel of judges in May and attend our digital Grand Final event on 23 June 2022. You will receive additional instructions, including guidelines on what to expect and prepare for the pitching sessions and Grand Finals event.
