  • Award Amount:           $1,000 (4 year College); $500 (Community College)

    Targeted Schools:        High Schools located in Durham and Orange County

    Targeted Churches:     FOCUS Members’ Churches

     

    Applicant Eligibility:

    1.      Applicant is a graduating high school senior who attends a high school within Durham or Orange counties and has been either a) accepted into a college/university or b) plans to enroll in a community college.

    – or –

    The applicant is enrolled in the Adult Basic Education (GED) program at Durham Technical community college and has been either a) accepted into a college/university or b) plans to enroll in a community college.

    2.      Applicant currently maintains an “unweighted” 2.5 GPA or higher.

    3.      Applicant provides evidence of community service involvement or experience.

    4.      Selected recipients must attend or send a representative to the Award Ceremony on the 4th Saturday in June.

    5.      Applicant must be an African American female.

    6.      Proof of enrollment is required in order for funds to be released.

    7.      A scholarship award is not renewable and the recipient can only apply once.

     

    Memorial Scholarships:

    Two of our scholarships will be awarded in memory of our FOCUS members.

    • In Memory of Dwanna Wiggins: Health Care Professional – We would like to honor our dear sister by supporting a student who will pursue a career in health care. 
    • In Memory of Patrice Carrington: Human Services – We would like to honor our dear sister by supporting a student who will pursue a career in human services.

  • How to Apply:

    The complete application packet must include the following:

    1. A completed application
    2. Official high school transcript (can be obtained from your Guidance Office)
    3. A current colored photograph of just yourself (for example a senior picture)
      ***Please note that if awarded a scholarship that your photo will be featured in the scholarship program***.
    4. A copy of the applicant’s Letter of Acceptance to a University or College (or evidence of enrollment for Community College students only).
    5. One Letter of Recommendation/Reference from:
      • a high school counselor or administrator OR
      • a community member (must be a non-related adult who has knowledge of the applicant’s potential for success)
    6. Two-page, typed essay (12-point font and double spaced) to include the following:
      • Major or undergraduate program and reason(s) for choosing that major or program
      • Future plans (what applicant would like to accomplish following the completion of their college studies
      • Community/outreach projects in which the applicant has participated within the last 4 years
      • • Perceived benefits of the receipt of this scholarship
    7. Upload all of the above application materials. Applications must be uploaded by the deadline April 30, 2022 in order to be considered.
