Additional details about Internet access
Internet access has never previously been required to operate the FairScan software. Now at Reed and AGHA fairs it is required to have Internet access on the laptop so that name badge contact details can be downloaded from the Reed/AGHA servers to the handheld.
We won’t be using much data during this process, but you will require Internet access every time you scan a name badge so it is recommended to have a fixed, reliable device to connect to the Internet.
FairScan recommends purchasing a prepaid Optus USB Modem. We can do this for you for $60 or you can supply and activate your own.
When purchasing an Optus Modem, 4GB of data is initially provided which lasts for 28 days. After that you can recharge the modem at the next Reed fair in August. Such rechargers are expected to cost $30 which gives 25GB of data for up to 28 days.
i.e. a new modem with included data for this fair will cost you $60. Then for future fairs the cost for data each fair will be approx $30 and paid directly to Optus Recharge
Below is a list of options that you have when selecting how you will connect to the Internet.
Option 1 – New Optus SIM
For this option you must already have an Optus USB Modem such as the one purchased last year.
The previous SIM card (that has expired) will be replaced with a new SIM card that will then be activated.
Included is 4GB of data to be used within 28 days which will provide enough time to use at the Sydney April fair.
If activated at the Melbourne Fair in March, you can then put the modem away and bring it out in Sydney and it will be ready to be used.
Once Reed/AGHA fairs return to normal schedule of February and August, this SIM card will be able to be used at each show as they are within 6 months of each other (SIM cards expire after 6 months of inactivity).
Option 2 – Buy Optus 4G USB Modem from FairScan
You can buy an Optus 4G USB Modem from FairScan for $60 which includes delivery and setup at the fair. For this option we will require a credit card for activation purposes (nothing is charged to the card, Optus will use it to verify your details).
This modem will be delivered, setup and tested during setup and your FairScan software will be updated (free of charge) at the same time.
This is the recommended option as it is easy to setup, maintain and gives you full control over your Internet access.
Option 3 – BYO Internet Access
If you have your own USB modem, or Wifi device then that can be used to connect to the Internet. You will be required to ensure there is credit/active internet on such a device and that the computer with FairScan is connected and able to access the Internet.
If you supply your own Internet then you will be required to setup, configure, test and maintain (recharge) that device
Using your Mobile Phones Hotspot
Using your phone as a Hotspot isn’t recommend at the fair. Most phones turn off their Hotspot after a period of inactivity so if you didn’t scan a new customer for say 30 minutes, the phone will turn off the Hotspot and the computer will no longer have any Internet.
Also if the phone moves too far away from the laptop (such as when visiting the bathroom or café) the Internet will drop out and new customer badges won’t be able to be scanned.
