POSITION OVERVIEW
The President will serve as a strategic leader and key partner to the CEO, overseeing the organization’s daily operations and ensuring the successful implementation of its vision and mission. This individual will drive organizational growth, operational excellence, and impact by leading teams, strengthening partnerships, and fostering an internal culture of collaboration, equity, and innovation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Leadership and Organizational Growth:
- Collaborate with the CEO to refine and implement the organization’s strategic plan.
- Oversee national and regional initiatives, ensuring alignment with CARES’ mission and goals.
- Strengthen and expand the CARES affiliate network, ensuring sustainable growth and impact.
- Serve as a key representative of CARES, advocating for its mission in national forums.
- Program and Impact Management
- Ensure the effective design, implementation, and evaluation of CARES mentoring programs.
- Lead the development of new initiatives that enhance the well-being of Black children and families.
- Maintain high standards of program quality, research, and culturally relevant approaches.
Operational and Financial Oversight:
- Overall oversight of day-to-day operations.
- Oversee financial strategy, including budgeting, fundraising, and resource allocation.
- Work with the development team to drive revenue growth through grants, partnerships, and philanthropy.
Team Leadership and Culture:
- Lead, inspire, and support a diverse team of staff and volunteers across multiple regions.
- Cultivate a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Ensure professional development and well-being for staff and volunteer leaders.
Partnerships and Community Engagement:
- Strengthen relationships with key stakeholders, including funders, corporate partners, and community leaders.
- Expand CARES’ presence by building strategic alliances with organizations committed to racial and educational equity.
- Advocate for policies and initiatives that align with CARES’ mission.
QUALIFICATIONS
- You must reside in the Tri-State area (New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut) for NYC events. The role is remote.
- At least 10 years of proven senior leadership experience in a nonprofit, education, social impact, or community-based organization.
- Passion for and deep understanding of racial justice, mentorship, and Black youth empowerment.
- Strong strategic thinking and operational management skills.
- Exceptional relationship-building, fundraising, and partnership development abilities.
- Excellent communication and public speaking skills.
- Experience leading diverse teams and fostering inclusive work environments.
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree required.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The National CARES Mentoring Movement is a pioneering, community-mobilization initiative, anchored by 58 local CARES Affiliates across 26 states, that directly addresses the life-shredding effects of intergenerational Black poverty and lays a blueprint for community recovery. We are the nation’s recognized leader in the recruitment, training and engagement of African American mentors, and the only organization providing holistic programming on a national scale to undergird and advance impoverished Black children by providing them with the emotional, social, academic and career-readiness support they must have to become self-sustaining, successful contributors to our society.
