The Performative and Toxic Roots of Kettlebell Culture is a 6 hour Movement Course that brings you on a journey through the history of the kettlebell.
We will be diving into the history and the influences of today's kettlebell culture and training systems. With its origins of play to its use within the Strongman culture as a part of performing dynamic feats of strength. We will follow this time line from military to sport, ending with learning more about the differences of kettlebell sport and the hard style approach.
We have carefully interweaved education and history along with movement and skills practice. This workshop was created to help participants understand the dynamics of physical culture today, which forces all bodies to conform to rigid toxic ideas about strength, beauty, athleticism and ability.
Our Objectives:
You will learn to Swing Styles:
The Sport Swing with Coach Liz
The Hard Style Swing with Coach Sam
We will discuss the history, influences, and barriers to both physical culture and Kettlebell culture. During the course, we will model the important practice of “meeting bodies where they are at” and how this helps coaches to infuse a social justice lens while working with bodies.
This is the process of unlearning toxic ideas that we have internalized from current certifying bodies and institutions. While deconstructing the ideas that we have learned about athleticism and ability that are ingrained within the fitness industry, we are using our bodies to reframe what movement and accessibility looks like.
What do we offer?
Participants will "polish their armor" and work towards building leadership while framing what movement means to bodies within their practice. This is a way we can nurture our seeds of growth and experience first hand the sense of belonging that the Fitness 4 All Bodies creates.
Duration: 6 Hours
Materials: You will receive a short manual and access to our Slack Community with other coaches who are building and reframing the fitness industry to include and celebrate all bodies.
