Recycling Challenge

  • DESCRIPTION:

    THIS OPPORTUNITY IS AVAILABLE TO RESIDENTS OF THE OYSTER BAY-EAST NORWICH LIBRARY DISTRICT.

    Since each container is worth 5¢, collecting 20 containers will equal a dollar, earning you one hour of community service. To make tracking easier, each receipt should be multiples of 20, any extra containers will not be counted and partial credit towards community service will not be given.

    In short, your receipt(s) should not equal more than 20 containers/$1.00's worth at a time UNLESS you can complete the following multiple of 20. 

    FOR EXAMPLE: 

    20 containers = $1.00 = 1 community service hour
    40 containers = $2.00 = 2 community service hours
    60 containers = $3.00 = 3 community service hours

    etc. 

    A maximum of 10 hours will be awarded per participant in a given school year. (ex. 10 hours  for the school year beginning in July 2024 to June 2025)

           VERY IMPORTANT        

    1. TAKE PHOTOS OF YOUR RECEIPT(S) BEFORE YOU REDEEM THEM. THESE PHOTOS SERVE AS CONFIRMATION OF YOUR PARTICIPATION. 
    2. WE CANNOT APPROVE HOURS WITHOUT A PHOTO OF THE RECEIPTS.
    3. RECEIPTS MUST BE FROM WITHIN THE PAST 60 DAYS OF SUBMISSION.

                                                 

  • INSTRUCTIONS:


    1. Collect 20 EMPTY containers, plastic water bottles, and/or aluminum cans.

    2. Bring them to a local bottle return center. See the list below.
     
    3. The machines are separated by CANS ONLY, PLASTIC ONLY, and GLASS ONLY.

    4. Deposit the containers into their correct machine. (Be careful and follow the machine's instructions)

    5. Once finished, press the button to print out your receipt.

    6. Take a picture of your receipt(s) BEFORE you cash it in*. 

    7. Bring the receipt inside to the cashier to redeem and collect your money!

    8. Fill out this form and attach the photo of your receipt(s).

    YOU'RE DONE. You can walk out knowing you reduced space in landfills, cleaned up the environment, saved the oceans, and earned a little money!

     * The receipt indicates the number of containers exchanged and the amount of money earned. See the picture above. 

     

    LOCAL BOTTLE EXCHANGE CENTERS:


    Stop and Shop: 295 Pine Hollow Rd, Oyster Bay, NY 11771
    Locust Valley Super Market:  220 Birch Hill Rd, Locust Valley, NY 11560

    You are not limited to just those two locations. You may go to other bottle exchange centers as long as you provide a photo of the receipt(s). 

     

    TIPS: 

    - Bring 1-2 extra aluminum can/or plastic water bottle JUST IN CASE one of your containers are rejected.

     

    Certain locations may reject containers IF they are:

    - The store does not carry that type of container, meaning the same brand, size, shape, color, and composition of the container.

    - The container does not have a proper New York refund label.

    - The container is not in reasonably good condition. (Some machines have difficulty reading crushed cans/bottles)

    - A store may reject broken bottles or cans that are corroded or crushed.

    - The container has anything in it besides small amounts of dirt, dust, or moisture.

  • Oyster Bay Library Recycling Challenge

    Inspired by the Manhasset Public Library, we are challenging Oyster Bay Teens to collect aluminum cans, glass and/or plastic water bottles and take them to a local bottle return center. For every $1.00 you collect, you will receive one hour of community service. The money you earn is yours to keep! A maximum of 10 hours will be awarded.
