The Aricka Amos Burrell Memorial Scholarship is available to female or male students. Applicants must meet all the eligibility requirements and the deadline to qualify. The selection process may include a virtual panel interview. Scholarship awards will be paid directly to the college or university on behalf of the student for tuition, fees, or books. The recipient will be recognized at the Friends for Life Foundation, Inc., Heart of Giving Luncheon in November 2024.
Eligibility for the scholarship:
- Male or female resident of North Fulton County, Georgia or a 2024 Strands of Elegance Cotillion Debutante or Escort residing outside North Fulton County, Georgia,
- High school senior with a B average or above,
- Demonstrate leadership, school and community involvement, and character,
- Write a 300 to 500 word essay, and
- Provide two Letters of Recommendation from non-family members (email to scholarships@friendsforlifega.org) prior to the May 31, 2024 deadline.
Ms. Aricka Amos Burrell
Ms. Aricka Amos Burrell was the niece of Mrs. Kathy Amos Lamar, a dedicated member of the Friends for Life Foundation, Inc. and the Phi Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® Mrs. Lamar relocated to Roswell, Georgia from Oak Park, Illinois where she served as the first African American President for the Oak Park, Illinois District 97 School Board. She serves as a mentor for children and youth in the North Fulton and metropolitan Atlanta communities as well as in her church. Kathy is a member of Ronald McDonald House Charities, the Azalea City - Georgia Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, and St. James United Methodist Church, where she serves as a member of the Senior Usher Board. Kathy is married to William Lamar, Jr. and is the mother of two adult sons, Brian and Andrew. Mrs. Lamar devotes time to her family and lovingly established the Aricka Amos Burrell Memorial Scholarship in memory of her niece who died of colon cancer in 2009. Aricka was a role model in her community and loved working with young people.
