Every time it rains, stormwater carries nutrients from fertilizers, bacteria from pet waste, and chemicals from herbicides and pesticides from our homes to local waterways. Using rain barrels or other rainwater harvesting systems are simple and often inexpensive ways to help reduce the amount of stormwater runoff polluting the James River and its tributaries. One rain barrel can collect over 2,500 gallons of water per year!
The James River Association is offering a series of rain barrel workshops this spring for our April Showers, May Flowers promotion. Each workshop is $50 and comes with a plastic 55-gallon drum, rain barrel assembly kit, a native plant from Reedy Creek Environmental, and instructions for assembly and installation at home.
