Being a part of Street Cats YYC does NOT require sobriety. Many of our volunteers are currently unhoused and using substances - this means that some team members may need to use tolerance doses while doing outreach. Are you comfortable working alongside folks that are using?
We ask volunteers to make their team members aware of what and when they are using while on outreach, and ask that the dose stays within an amount that allows them to remain alert. Sometimes, that doesn’t always happen.
Yes, I am fully comfortable working alongside folks that are using
No, I am not comfortable working alongside folks that are using
Yes, I am comfortable working alongside folks that are using, as long as I have other team members with me

What are some de-escalation skills you utilize when you encounter someone in distress? Are you able to navigate supporting folks who are in heightened emotional states? What about folks experiencing suicidal ideation?
We sometimes encounter folks who are escalated and in need of non-judgement, understanding and patience. We understand that not everyone is comfortable being in these types of situations - let us know if you are able to provide that type of support, or what your boundaries are with doing so.

This group is dedicated to reducing the harms inflicted upon the most oppressed people in our society. These harms stem from systemic neglect and failure. Our goal is to engage and build relationships with people who use substances, while providing them with harm reduction supplies, support, and resources to help them stay safe. Providing food is a gentle way to break barriers and foster warm interactions. In offering my time to volunteer with Street Cats YYC, I acknowledge that: **I am:** - Fluent in harm reduction ideologies. - Dedicated to continuously learning and growing in ways to reduce harm and support people who use substances, participate in sex work, or experience houselessness. - Capable of recognizing an opioid poisoning, confident in my ability to respond, provide care, and administer Naloxone. - Prepared to create a safe space for those using substances who want a bystander to monitor during consumption, ensuring that no adverse events occur or responding if necessary. - Ready to de-escalate and be present in all interactions. **I will:** - Maintain respectful language that reduces stigma and harm. - Ensure I maintain a respectful distance in all interactions, being mindful of the overwhelming feeling when too many people approach an individual. - Assess my mental health preparedness to appropriately engage and support people who use drugs. - Listen to and understand the daily debrief, and ask questions when unsure. - Distribute supplies, food, and fluids in a manner that ensures we reach as many people as possible each night. - Stay with a partner at all times. - HAVE FUN! **I will NOT:** - Take any photos unless discussed with leadership. - Speak on behalf of or about Street Cats YYC to the media or alternative outlets without the organization's consent. - Increase the risk of negative impacts from police presence on those who remain on the streets after our interactions. - Leave the group during outreach without notifying others about my whereabouts. - Bring a friend(s) to outreach with the intent for them to volunteer without discussing it with leadership beforehand. - Push abstinence-based ideologies or motives on anyone I encounter, especially if they are not interested in sobriety, whether they are in active use or not.
