2022 YOUNG BLACK WOMEN SCHOLAR'S SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION
The National Coalition of 100 Black Oakland/Bay Area Chapter (NCBW/OBAC) is accepting applications from female students currently enrolled in a Bay Area high school who are bound for a four-year university, community college or trade school. The program also accepts applications from undergraduate and graduate students who attended high school in the Bay Area.

NCBW/OBAC is a non-profit advocacy organization dedicated to improving the lives of African American women and the Black community in general. The Oakland/Bay Area Chapter accomplishes its educational mission through education programs for girls and women and through scholarships.

How Do Students Qualify?
- To qualify for a scholarship, a student must be a senior enrolled in a Bay Area school for a minimum of the last two years of high school or admitted and currently enrolled in a trade school, community college or a university in the Bay Area.
- High School applicants must have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 during grades 10 through 12; and demonstrate promise of continued academic achievement.
- Continuing college students must have earned a minimum culative GPA of 2.5 during their school tenure.
- Complete the application, provide required documents and complete essays.
- All candidates must document a need for financial assistance.
- The school listed in your application must be the school you are currently attending or planning to attend at the time you seek payment of your award.
- NCBW reserves the right to rescind an award if the school or any information provided for payment differs from information provided in the application,
- Awardees must agree to periodically provide education and career updates to NCBW/OBAC as requested.
  
  Applicants who received a NCBW-OBAC scholarship in 2021 are not eligible to apply this year except for those who previously participated in NCBW's Positive Steps Program.
  
  Applicants should submit a signed, completed application with all the documentation to be included with your download submission. (Do not mail any documents).
  
  Students must address the following topics in the application:

  - Extracuricular Emgagememt
  - Leadership Experience
  - Financial Need
How Are Students Selected?
- Students are selected for scholarships by NCBW/OBAC on their eduational achievements, community involvement, leadership skills and the ability to follow the explicit instructions in this application.
- All documents must be included before the application can be submitted.
- Recipients are chosen through a process with each Essay given a weighted value and is evaluated based on the following areas: Essay Quality, Grade Point Average, Financial Need and Community/School Involvement.
- Applicant must be a U.S. Citizen.

Essay I - Academic Achievements Describe in approximately 500 words using complete sentences and incorporating your own personal experiences to develop your responses to the following questions: 1. Excluding family members, select a woman who has significantly influenced you. (This could be a woman you personally know or a woman you learned or read about and was inspired by their life). Describe that influence and explain what actions you have taken to incorporate her values into your daily life. 2. Describe why receiving this scholarship is important to you. Include any academic and non-academic accomplishments, personal characteristics, or experiences that make you uniquely worthy of scholarship consideration.
Essay II - Community Service Describe in approximately 500 words, using complete sentences, your responses to the following: 1. Describe your community service activities over the last year and why you chose to give your time? 2. Describe how you, as an adult, will strive to help create a better community/world? This can be through field of study or personal commitment.
Essay III - Extracurricular Engagement In your essay, describe in approximately 300 words, using complete sentences, the following: List any activities, volunteer work, honors, additional languages spoken, and why you joined or participated in each area and how you plan to use those experiences in college and beyond.

Essay IV -Leadership Experience Describe in approximately 500 words, using complete sentences, your leadership experience and how it has contributed to your overall development. Include answers to the following questions in your response: 1. What does being a role model meant to you and describe two or three examples how you have been a role model to other students? 2. What skills do you possess that you believe will help make you successful? 3. Share one or two things that fall under the category, "I wish someone would have to me that" and what would you had done differently if you had know?

3. Former Positive Steppers who are continuting college students are required to complete three essay questions - A, B, and C.

4. An official copy of your high school or college(s) with original registrar’s stamp, showing credit hours for each course, grade, and date of completion.

5. Two recent signed letters of recommendation, from teachers, counselors, principals, community or civic leaders, or religous leader on their letterhead.

6. Copy of your recent FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and sources for financial aid.

Your Application must be received in it's entirety by NCBW

on or before May 14, 2022 to be considered.
