    2022 YOUNG BLACK WOMEN SCHOLAR'S SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

  • The National Coalition of 100 Black Oakland/Bay Area Chapter (NCBW/OBAC) is accepting applications from female students currently enrolled in a Bay Area high school who are bound for a four-year university, community college or trade school. The program also accepts applications from undergraduate and graduate students who attended high school in the Bay Area. 

    NCBW/OBAC is a non-profit advocacy organization dedicated to improving the lives of African American women and the Black community in general. The Oakland/Bay Area Chapter accomplishes its educational mission through education programs for girls and women and through scholarships. 


    How Do Students Qualify?

    • To qualify for a scholarship, a student must be a senior enrolled in a Bay Area school for a minimum of the last two years of high school or admitted and currently enrolled in a trade school, community college or a university in the Bay Area.
    • High School applicants must have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 during grades 10 through 12; and demonstrate promise of continued academic achievement.
    • Continuing college students must have earned a minimum culative GPA of 2.5 during their school tenure.
    • Complete the application, provide required documents and complete essays.
    • All candidates must document a need for financial assistance.
    • The school listed in your application must be the school you are currently attending or planning to attend at the time you seek payment of your award.
    • NCBW reserves the right to rescind an award if the school or any information provided for payment differs from information provided in the application,
    • Awardees must agree to periodically provide education and career updates to NCBW/OBAC as requested.

      Applicants who received a NCBW-OBAC scholarship in 2021 are not eligible to apply this year except for those who previously participated in NCBW's Positive Steps Program.

       
      Applicants should submit a signed, completed application with all the documentation to be included with your download submission. (Do not mail any documents).

    How Are Students Selected?

    • Students are selected for scholarships by NCBW/OBAC on their eduational achievements, community involvement, leadership skills and the ability to follow the explicit instructions in this application.
    • All documents must be included before the application can be submitted.
    • Recipients are chosen through a process with each Essay given a weighted value and is evaluated based on the following areas: Essay Quality, Grade Point Average, Financial Need and Community/School Involvement.
    • Applicant must be a U.S. Citizen.

    FINANCIAL STATEMENT OF NEED 
    1. Include a recent copy of you FAFSA Statement.
    2. Itemize your sources for financial aid with the projected amounts along with the projected financial costs for college.
    3. List an other scholarships or financial support that you will receive. (Include the dollar amount for each source).

    Please complete the application and attach the following five items listed below.   You will not be able to submit your application without all the required documentation. 

     

    1.     Your completed Application.

    2.    Completed and attached required Essays based on the guidelines outlined.

    3. Former Positive Steppers who are continuting college students are required to complete three essay questions - A, B, and C.

    4. An official copy of your high school or college(s)  with  original registrar’s stamp, showing credit hours for each course, grade, and date of completion.   

    5. T
    wo recent signed letters of recommendation, from teachers, counselors, principals, community or civic leaders, or religous leader on their letterhead. 

    6.  Copy of  your recent FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and sources for financial aid.

     

     

    Your Application must be received in it's entirety by NCBW

    on or before May 14, 2022 to be considered.
