The Mann Art Gallery is hosting a series of workshops with artists and Knowledge Keepers Leah Dorion, Bonny Johnson, and Elder Liz Settee. The workshops will culminate in a Métis ribbon skirt exhibition to be held at the Mann Art Gallery in September and October 2022, with the possibility of exhibition at other venues. Participants will be considered artists, and will receive instruction and mentorship from Leah Dorion and Bonny Johnson, and guidance from Elder Liz Settee, as they learn about, design, and sew their Métis High-Plains style ribbon skirt which tells their particular story. Participating artists will write artist statements about their skirts, and be professionally photographed wearing them. The exhibition will display the ribbon skirts on mannequins beside the printed artist statements and photographs. Participating artists will receive CARFAC artist exhibition royalties (artist fees) for exhibiting their work, and artists retain ownership of their skirts and copies of their photographs. Photographs will also be taken to document the process, and may be posted online.
Workshops will take place in person at the Mann Art Gallery in Prince Albert, SK, but may also include virtual/remote components (group discussions via Zoom, by telephone, etc). Multiple workshops will take place in May and June, and the project may continue into July if needed.
You are invited to fill out this form to apply to be one of the participating artists in this program and exhibition. The lead artists will contact you for an interview, and notify you if you have been accepted into the program.
