Thank you very much for your interest regarding conversion to Judaism. Below is our application form, please complete it in full and attach a passport size photo of yourself. Thank you!
When we receive your completed application and fee of $600, we will arrange a time to interview you in order to discuss the conversion process and all its requirements with you. This initial interview will last about half an hour. We will be interested to hear what has brought you to your decision and what experience you have had of Jewish living. We will almost certainly make some recommendations for further reading.
Once you have begun your general affiliation and immersion into the Jewish community, and started attending synagogue with regularity, we will arrange a number of follow up interviews. When you are formally accepted as a candidate, the Sydney Beth Din will appoint an approved tutor to guide you in the observance of Jewish traditions and customs.
The Sydney Beth Din will continue to monitor your progress through interviews and feedback from your appointed teacher and the Rabbi of the synagogue you attend.
Please note that during the conversion process you will learn of the three pillars of observance of the Jewish Faith. They are the observance of the Sabbath, The Jewish Dietary Laws ( Kashrut ) and the Laws of Family Purity (Taharat HaMishpacha) as well as the thirteen principles of faith as taught by Maimonides. These are all absolutely mandatory for conversion to take place. Similarly, to ensure proper Sabbath observance it is mandatory that the candidate live within easy walking distance of the Synagogue before the time of conversion. These are all matters that you need to take into consideration when contemplating conversion.
During the process candidates will be expected to meet with the Beth Din every six months. No plans should be made for any Jewish wedding until specific approval is given by the Beth Din as there can be no guarantees in advance as to how long the conversion process will take. It will depend upon the candidate's grasp of the material and more importantly their commitment to full observance. Candidates will not be considered for final conversion until they are fully observant for a minimum of nine months. Candidates should expect the process to take not less than two years.
When you are ready, after careful consultation with your teacher and Rabbi, you will be recommended to the Sydney Beth Din for an interview to determine whether you are ready for a final test for conversion. If you are ready this will be followed shortly by a full examination. You will have to obtain a reference letter both from your teacher and Rabbi which should be forwarded independently to the Beth Din. Once you complete and pass the final examination your conversion will take place. The Beth Din will monitor your level of observance for a further 12 months following your conversion with a meeting again after six months and again at twelve months. At that time, if your observance is up to the Beth Din standard and at it's discretion you will be issued your conversion certificate.
When you are approved for conversion a final fee of $700 is required There are no other charges from the Beth Din for conversion. However you will have to pay $200 for a single applicant or $250 for a couple or family at the mikvah and your personal tutor will charge tutoring rates - however these are fees neither charged nor fixed by the Beth Din.
In submitting this application form, you are embarking on an exciting journey of spiritual and self discovery. However, after you begin the conversion process, you may recognise that your personal fulfilment is not found in conversion to Judaism. Equally, Jewish teaching recognises that it is possible to be spiritually fulfilled and be a good person without becoming a Jew. These are choices and decisions that you will need to make.
As a final note, please be aware that the Sydney Beth Din can make no guarantees that in submitting an application, you will necessarily become accepted into the Jewish faith.
