Members of the Dartmouth School Committee:
We, the residents of Dartmouth have spoken! On April 5th, we made history by turning out in record numbers and voting 81%-19% to retain the Dartmouth Indians name and symbol. This is a mandate! Dartmouth is united behind the Indian symbol.
I urge you to immediately vote to reaffirm and preserve the Dartmouth Indians name and symbol at the April 25th school committee meeting. I also urge you to partner with local tribes and establish an educational framework for the enhancement of local indigenous history in our schools.
The will of the people must be upheld. Voters have clearly rejected the notion that our symbol, designed by a member of the Wampanoag Tribe, is 'racist.' If there is not an immediate re-affirmation at the next school committee meeting, all options are on the table including peaceful protests and school committee member recalls.
Thank you,
